I'm guessing this isn't possible but I thought I'd ask the people that would know. I have an opportunity to buy one for cheap and was wondering if there is any way I could make it work.

Sure it is possible, but that is a lot of hoe for such a light tractor. JD
recommends the 7 or 47 hoe as I recall. At least they mount it close-in
to the back of the tractor. The photo is of a 7 on a 955 with turfs.
Even the 7 will pull the tractor around while digging.

I have lots of seat time in 955s with a backhoe mounted. I used custom
subframes and a hoe that weighed a bit more than the 48. It was VERY
easy to drag the tractor around, which limits your digging productivity.

Depending on the deal, it may still be hard to pass up the 48.

$2000 or maybe a bit less. Understanding that it is over sized for the 955, would it take a lot of custom work to get it mount to the 955?

That sounds like a scam...but if it's the real deal then buy it and sell it for 6k. I think it's to much hoe for your machine.

It might be a scam. But I spoke with the guy who is local to where I live. It may well be too much hoe for my machine, but If I go look at it and it is indeed for real...

I'm not getting a different tractor, but I would like a backhoe. If I can make this work for the tractor I have (though it may be over sized).

If I can make it work without too much custom work for very moderate digging, for the price...
Should I not give it a go for judicious use, keeping in mind I would have to be aware of the very light weight of the 955?

If so, can anyone speak to how much custom work (if any) it might take to attach it to the 955?

He is supposed to send me pictures tonight. If I go and see it in person, what should I look for to discern a scam?

Thanks for everyone's advice.

DFKRUG,
I would especially appreciate your input, since you have said you have mounted an even bigger hoe on the 955 than the 48.

Thanks!

I'll post pictures when he sends them to me to see what you think.

That looks like an old 8 hoe, on maybe a JD 1050? Look at that subframe....
you can see a bit of it in one photo.

Anyway, I have made subframes for 2 of my hoes on 955s, and they
were not hard to make. The hoe is a clone of the Woods 7500, but
this one is a good deal heavier because it has more steel and uses
2 swing cyls instead of one. It is in the same class at the 8, or 48, or 448
from JD. It weighs a bit more than the 48, but it is not bigger.

$2K is a good deal, as long as it has no rust on the cylinder rods, and
the hydraulics work. You can't use his subframe, however.

Here is my 955/PrairieDog, and one of the subframes I made.

Thanks for your input. I'm just not sure if I would be getting in over my head trying to make it work.

I just bought the tractor. I'm not a welder. I'm very mechanically inclined, but there are alot of variables here. That thing looks huge.

Seems like a really good deal though....

Arrgh torn.
