on my 4300 (2001), the pto lever has 3 positions: back = off, forward = on....what is the middle position? the operators book seems to indicate that there is only off and on, and no middle position. w/ engine running, pto turns in middle and forward position.

i'm thinking that it might be 'neutral' as i can only turn the pto by hand (engine off) w/ the lever in the middle position. ON the thing won't turn at all, OFF it will turn a few degrees either direction.

thanks.

ok, i will have to test the positions some more. i thought i read that if the mid was on, the rear had to be on (mid run from a spur gear off rear).

i have a push/pull rod to engage the mid. the decal says 'do not engage mid while main is running'. this lead me to believe that the main lever engaged them both, so off = both off, on = main on if mid lever off, on = both on if main on and mid lever on....

I had to rethink my reply about rear, both, and mid with mid being optional. The 4300 and similar had an unusual setup for PTO engagement that lended itself to accidental damage. You are correct about a spur gear connection to the mid PTO and damage will occur if engaged while rear PTO is engaged. The arrangement I was thinking of uses one lever to select either or both PTOs prior to engaging the PTO clutch that feeds that lever selection. That makes both PTOs independent and always safe to engage. Your PTO lever is for engaging the rear PTO (and mid if previously also selected with the knob) and I don't see any reason for an extra position.

My 2230 has 3 positions also.... front, front & rear, and rear. I have no clue why I'd want to run front & rear at the same time!!

You are correct...it is neutral (that is off, but free spinning, no brake). Use neutral to turn the PTO stub for hooking up drive shafts.

thanks alot for the info. initially, i thought the main lever did just off and on, and the push/pull selected between mid and rear, but then things started to not make sense.

thanks again.
