Thermistor Replacement

Does anyone know if a john deere 5310 has a thermistor? My symptoms seem to be the exact same, but I can't seem to find one anywhere.

When you try to start it, it will turn over, but the fuel shut off solenoid does not open, therefore not allowing fuel to start it. You can run a jump wire from the battery positive to the top of the fuel shut off solenoid, and it will crank. All fuses have been checked. I was wondering, what is keeping the fuel shut off solenoid from opening up?

Mine was buried in the wire harness about 4 inches down. Had to twist the fuse panel around and cut the tape back about 4 inches and found the thermistor.

I have a nice fix for this thermister issue:

I have a 4600 which had this same issue with the thermister. I narrowed it down by sliding out the fuse panel and peeling back some of the insulation around the thermister. I gave it half a twist to connect its terminals together and then the tractor would start every time. Of course, this is only a debugging step since keeping that shorted will overheat the fuel shutoff solenoid.

Since this stupid thermister is a known reliability issue, I didn't want to put another one in. I went on ebay and found a marine normally-open pushbutton switch that I mounted in the plastic slightly below the key switch. Now when I turn on the key, I just press the pushbutton at the same time. Then I hear a very comforting click of the solenoid and the pushbutton can be let go. This effectively does what the thermister should have been doing. Not only does this fix the problem, but it acts as a security device because the switch is very low profile and looks like a chrome hole plug. Some unauthorized person will never be able to get the tractor to start since they won't know that the button needs to be pressed in when the key is turned on.

Do you mind providing a link to the part and a few pictures with diagram showing what you put in? I'm on my 3rd thermistor and while easy to put in a new one; a permanent fix would be great.

Wow, am I ever glad that I didn't bother replacing that stupid thermister!!!!!

For the switch, search ebay for this:
16mm Water Proof Starter Switch Boat Horn Momentary Push Button Stainless Steel

The seller is "frentaly".

All you do is extend the wires that the thermister connects to and run them to this switch. I soldered speaker wire to them and insulated the joints with heat shrink tubing. Then when you switch the key from off to on, you need to make sure that you're pressing this switch at the same time. You don't need to hold the switch while cranking the engine because once the solenoid has moved, it will stay there. As I wrote earlier, the switch is then doing the job that the thermister should do. I'll post a photo of where I mounted the switch so you can see. My tractor starts every time now, and it's so nice to hear that solenoid click when I turn on the key. I'm so glad that I can be a help!!

Here's the photo of where my switch is. This is very low-profile switch and the only disadvantage of this one is it's hard to push it when you have gloves on. I chose this switch because it's waterproof and should be very reliable. It's also good looking and stainless so it will never rust. Any normally-open momentary contact switch can be used. Another downside to this approach is that it requires both hands when you turn the key on.

In case you can't tell, the new switch is that little shiny button directly below the key switch. IMG_0561.jpg
