I have a new 2520, which I just got it in September. Today, I decided to switch out the mower and loader, for the front quick hitch and blade, to get her ready for winter. (First time I've done this)

After a little fooling around to get the bracket that holds the front hitch on, since I didn't get any instruction sheets, I finally got it all set up, and everything working.

All seems OK except, when I angle the blade to the right, the hydraulic movement is not smooth, and you can hear the hydraulic pump sort of straining. This happens when I push the Joystick all the way to the right. If I don't push the stick hard to the right, everything seems to work fine. It sort of feel like there is a "detent" at the far right of the Joystick, similar to what you feel when you push the lever forward into the "float" position.

I called my dealer and explained what was happening, and he thought I was describing a condition they had seen before where there was an obstruction in the hydraulic system, and was going to get their service people to call me back, but I haven't heard from them yet, since it was about 4:30 in the afternoon when I called.

I removed and reconnected the hydraulic couplers to make sure they were on properly but then I remembered that I had read something in the tractors owners manual under the operation of the SCV section about some implements that don't use the "regen" feature of the SCV valve. They go on to explain how to "lock out" this "regen" feature, which requires taking off the right rear wheel and switching around a little "L" shaped bracket on the SCV valve itself.

What is the "regen" feature, and what does it do. There is nothing in the tractor manual that explains it, and it says to refer to the specific implement manual. Whatever that means.

If when I push the joystick hard to the right, am I "activating" this regen feature, and is this what is giving me the straining and jerky movement of the blade? Do I really have to go through all the trouble of switching around that little lock out thingy, or can I just use it the way it is and just not push the joystick hard to the right, where it gets into the "regen" function mode?

Just don't push the lever all the way to the right. Past that click puts it into regen mode which basically is a free wheel mode. It is for use with the loader. It lets you dump a heavy load faster by letting the bucket just fall (tilt forward) by its own weight rather than waiting for the hydraulics to move it to that position. Anything other than that situation it will just act strange. My 755 has a label on the tractor by the joystick trying to indicate this mode, meaning push it all the way and you are not activating the hydraulic cylinder just dumping the bucket.

Glad to help. I should add that the fender label also shows the float mode for when the joystick is pushed all the way forward. Some also question that feature. Too bad Deere no longer provides labels, but maybe with all the optional features with diverter valves it might lose some value.

Is there also a dump mode for dropping the the loader arm?

That would be the float mode, but never use that to lower the loader arms. They will drop dangerously fast. Float is just for when the arms are down and you want to grade or plow, such as moving snow. In float mode the stick will stay in float until you pull it back. Regen is just momentary.

Looks like they do still have a label on the tractors. Attachment is from the 2520 manual. The manual also describes the regen and float modes.

Thanks JD755........I did see something in the manual, "trying" to explain the 4positions of the joystick, but the explanation sure wasn't as "user friendly" as yours.

Seems in a lot of cases, manufacturers try to use a picture to describe some functions, and assume that everyone understands exactly what the picture is supposed to convey. At least I know now what the "regen" feature is. Why they didn't just explain it as you have makes no sense to me. In the manual they go on to explain how to "lock out" the regen position. When would you want to lock it out, if you can simply choose to not use it?

Thanks again, I'll just remember to not push the joystick to the regen setting and should be OK. Hey, if I forget, I'll soon remember when the blade doesn't move to the right.

I agree they don't explain it very well in the manual. The label is also not really much of an explanation either, although I know it can be hard to come up with one simple label picture to impart much information.

The lockout feature is just to make it so you don't have to be careful about not getting into the regen mode, since unlike the float mode, there is not much of any detent when getting to regen. That can make it too easy to accidentally move the stick just a little too far, usually mutter a couple words about it, and then back off. My 755 does not have a lockout, but the European version of mine does. It is just an extra lever you move that will limit the movement of the stick. Many of the current JD models do have that lockout lever, which is accessible from the operator seat. On your 2520 it is more complicated to select lockout, what with having to remove a wheel to get to it. Given the choice, I would lock it out and leave it locked out.

I use the float mode on my 2520 bucket to drop the bucket and arms every time I park the tractor and it has never dropped fast.
From the sound of the hydraulics there is a bypass/speed flow restrictor of some sort .

My tractor was delivered with bucket drop locked out.
