I have a 54 inch front blade and I purchased some new 2 link snow chains for the front. Yesterday I went to put them on and I realized that there is very little clearance between the front axle and the tire. Honestly I was quite surprised by the tight clearance, it not like it is a tight fit with the chain, there isn't even room for the chain to fit down between the side of the tire and the axle.
The front tires are evenly dished within a few millimeters, so flipping the tires is not an option.
I see two options:
Front wheel spacers, but I Googled it and I see some complains about affecting steering geometry and also there maybe some clearance issues and tire rub with the loader kick stand. The spacers could be seasonal if the handling is affected too much.
Rear chains and use differential brakes for steering.
Cost is about the same, the spacers are expensive, and so are large chains for the rear. I like the front chains since it provides front steerage and with 4 wheel drive the traction. I also believe that the front chains will be easier on the pavement. Next year I plan to build a detached garage and redo the driveway possibly with a stamped concrete or brick pavers so I would like a gentler solution.
