430 Lawn Tractor
Hello all,

I'm a new guy on the block here with a used 1988 JD430 Lawn tractor
that I recently purchased.

It has about 980 hours on it and today it began losing power.

I suspect the fuel transfer pump as the sound of it with the
key on changes. Fuel coming out of the filter vent is kinda
shaky.

I've looked up the part for my engine: CM3029D019930 and found
a part #AM876207. Appears that's not available from my searches.

I have found an AM876116, which is supposedly for the earlier engine.

My question is: Will this one work? Or should I find an aftermarket pump
such as a Racor?

Hard to believe I've put less than 4 hours on this tractor and have problems
already. Now I wish I hadn't bought a 23 year old machine.
Maybe next year I'll look for an X740 or 2305....

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Gordon

I had fuel pump problems a few years ago with my L130 mower and bought a small electric fuel pump from NAPA and installed it. Around $30+ bucks this is great since it allows pumping up pressure before starting the engine. On yours you would be able to bleed the air out quickly when changing filters too.
I hooked it to the ignition switch circuit for power, so it turns on and off with the key.

I assume it is not running. Maybe its not the pump. Did you change the fuel filter? Is the fuel shutoff solenoid engaging when the key is turned on?

Thanks for the reply.
It is running, but was losing power. Lucky to get it back to my shop.

I pulled the seat and deck cover to get a better look at it.

I'm now investigating a faulty ignition switch. Since that's used
all the time, it's possible the contacts have worn down that
run the pump.

I'll hook up a voltmeter today and go right to the pump's connector
and double check.

My guess is that since the pump will run o.k, then slow down
and run erratically, it points to the switch or electrical system.

Problem found:
Corrosion and pitting on the 25 amp ATP style (plug-in) fuse.

Previous owner hadn't done a good housekeeping job on this machine
and the fuse block was quite dirty with grass debris.

The fuse had actual pitting on it where the poor connection was.

I took the spare fuse out of its holder, polished it up with some
steel wool and blew out the socket with compressed air.

It's working perfectly now.

Luckily I didn't have to spring for a new pump or ignition switch.

Moral of story: If you have this type of fuse on your machine,
take a look at them occasionally and make sure the contacts are
kept shiny and clean.

Whew!
Thanks for the ideas and input....
