Hello friends, i have a old john deere 2040. The year is 1980 and its the 2wd model with no cab. I was wondering if any of you owned one and what your opinions were on it? Right now its sitting, waiting for me to hot wire it when its batteries are fully charged haha. It hasnt been started up in about a year and what should i expect/replace/check? thanks a TON!

Why is it necessary to "hot wire" it? The ignition keys are generic and available at most JD dealers. 2040's were nice 40 pto HP utility tractors.

Those are nice tractors and agree with Jim the keys are readily available at your dealer. Hard to know what to tell you about start up, what is the history of the tractor?

Sorry i was a little late about answering your questions, but we've owned it for probably 20 years. Its sat outside since we've owned it. Im going to drive it for my first time probably some time this month. The person who's always operated it was a good family friend.
But the reason it will need to be hotwired is because for some VERY mysterious reason, where the ignition/key is, all the wires are unpluged? and i have not been able to find a diagram as to how they get plugged back in and the manual is pretty much useless for that. So, i don't really hotwire it, i put a screwdriver on 2 different nuts on the starter and that starts it.

Oh ya, and i do have the keys for it, but theyre useless without all the wires being plugged in.

I just bought a '76 2040 two weeks ago and so far I love it. It's easy on fuel starts easy and plenty of power for my needs. I got a JD shop manual from EBay last week, I'll check and see what it shows for ignition wiring in the morning and let you know. Here's a couple pics of mine, decals and hood emblem should be here in a day or 2.

I wouldn't think there would be that many wires going to/from ign switch on a 2040.
hot wire from battery attaches to "B" post
wire going to starter solenoid attaches to "S" post
wire going to dash lights/gauges attaches to "I" post

Ok #10 in the middle of the pic is the key switch. Wire #46 is red 16 gauge coming from the alternator indicator light. Wire 47 is black 14 gauge and goes to the starter/safety switch. Wire 49 is red 16gauge and goes to the circuit breaker/ light switch. I assume G is your ground and IGN is the ignition. Hope this helps. Keep us posted!

Yours, definately looks nicer than mine. Ours needs new paint, but first we need to check up on the hydraulic oil leak from under the engine. We have NO idea as to where its coming from though.

Thanks for the diagram, but its not what im needing. Im talking DIRECTLY where the key goes in, but on the other side of the dashboard.
