Replacing seal on fromt pto shaft on JD 855

Does anyone know how to replace the fromt pto seal on a JD 855? By looking at I can't tell if I have to take the rearend apart or if there is an easier way.

That should read front pto shaft.

From the FSM, I assume you mean the mid pto.

The transaxle front cover must be removed for the
following seal replacement:
• Mid PTO Drive Shaft Seal (M800600).

Yes, I do mean the mid pto. Thanks for your reply. That's what I was afraid of.

Thanks for your follow up. Since my original post I have gotten a technical manual and it looks like I have to do quite a bit to get the front cover of the transaxle off to get to the seal. $5.00 part but several hours labor.

Isn't that often the case? Part is cheap but the time it takes to get to it....

I really need to get working lights on my other tractor so that I may pull the 855 out of service for a while. Lots to do on it and it's too important to have down for any length of time.

Hi, Where you able to get the job done? I have the same issue with a 855 a just purchased. Did you have any give in the mid PTO when it leaked? Any info on how the job went would help.
