I can't afford new so I am curious which used JD 120hp range cab unit were good reliable machines? My budget is limited at about 40K tops. I need 4wd with a cab. There seem to be alot of variations just looking for solid opinons.

Is that pto horsepower or gross? How about loader? Depending upon hours, you could get into a good 6420 for around $40K.

We had a 6410 with a 640 loader. Used and abused 365 days a year on a dairy farm until we sold the cows. Bought it new around 1998. Very reliable. Although, I think it's rated a bit over 90 horse. Recently traded it for a 7130. Pre 6000 series, there would be your 4055 (about 111 hp) then up to a 4255 (about 127hp). And if you really want to save some money, you could get the 40 or 42 in a 50, 40, or 30 series, although the farther back you go, you'll have less luck finding one with 4wd/cab. We've had a 4030, 4040, 4230 and 2 4240's and have been happy with all, but they were all 2wd. Still have one 4240 with cab.

JD 40 series & below were HFWA not MFWD. HFWA weren't as useful as MFWD. I agree the 50 or 55 series would be a good choice. I've owned a 4255 since '93 and it now has 10,500 hrs on it.

120 gross and yes with a loader. I'll check those model out. When do you get concerned about the hour rating?

Amt of hrs requiring an overhaul depends on previous maintenance and use. I've seen JD engines go as high 15,000 hrs without an OH and then some get an OH at 4K-5K hrs

I forgot about the HFWA. We didn't get our first tractor with front assist until we traded the 4640 in for a 4955 back in the early 90's. Now we have 5 MFWD's running around here counting the little 2520.

The 50 and 55 series were two of the better series that they built even by todays standards we have active farms that stay with that group only.

Hours are tied real close to price - fewer hours - higher price. 'Course, it's the same with having a loader - it's more $$$. Yep... those HFWA were dog-sh@t. Stay away... far away.
