    Default 64 years young

No kidding, a tractor forum. Whodathot?
One step JD has been down several years
for water in the oil. Dealer said it's not
worth fixing. Without knowing if it is
just the cooler (possible) or warped/cracked
head or block. It's perfect for my 7.5 acres
so I need to defy the dealer and tackle it.
Otherwise I'm trying to decide what 0
turn to buy for my 2.5 acre yard. Limited
budget (sub $2G). Used OK. What holds up?

    It's a 2240, '78 I think. The brake mechanism was totally
refurbished before I got it in '95. I totally rebuilt all the
front end components, had the injection pump rebuilt
and added a few things, like air horns and extra lights.
Broke my heart when the thing overheated pulling a
    two-bottom 16" plow for a neighbor. If I can't find
someone to tear down that 3 cyl Perkins I may have
    to tackle it myself.
    Thanks for the welcome.

German built JD 50 HP? I would not give up on that old girl. Those are nice tractors, I was looking at a used one a while back. Regretted not getting it. Tractor data says that is a JD engine.

The engine is a JD engine not a Perkins. Water in oil is either a cracked cyl head, leaking head gasket or possibly a leaking cyl. liner o-ring or a hole in a cyl. liner. 2240 is worth an engine repair job.
