Does anyone have any tips on what I could look for with reference to the following: I have a John Deere 990 Tractor. Almost everytime I try to use the bush hog, when I go to engage the PTO, the bolt pin shears. Thanks

Are you trying to engage at idle speed?

How worn is the shaft or part the shear bolt fits into . And agreed as Tx Jim suggested to idle engine then increase speed and bush hog increases spin.
Proper sized bolt also not hardened .

Idle speed is probably the key... But do lift the cutter and look under it in case there is something blocking the blade, like a piece of bent metal. Try to turn the blade by hand. If it doesn't turn freely than it could be frozen for a number of reasons.

But you are probably just engaging it at full rpm.
