Tractor
too many
In my 4210 manual it states that blue and white smoke is
normal upon startup.

I don't see this after a few minutes but I do notice that
this little bugger stinks if you get exhaust in your face
even later on.

My Kubota just smells like stinky diesel when you get it
in your face, especially at startup, the JD smells like
something else.

I know none of you make a point to take odor samples but
do your 4x10 tractors exhale something other than a
"normal" diesel smell?

What is the blue smoke from? For Deere to mention it in the
operator's manual must be design. Oil near valve guides? Or
maybe a wide range in metal expansion somewhere that seals
up when warm?

Manual also mentions it will be louder at startup. I can see
that from difference in combustion efficiency with a warm
versus cold engine.

Someone somewhere on TBN there was a discussion on diesel
fuel additives, some of which lower noise levels. Any ideas?

Have any of you found different brands of diesel smelling
differently or the tractor being louder/quieter?

thanks for any advice

The above doesn't really matter, my dog begins to stink
soon after a bath and I still like her too!

Del,

Are you happy with your JD 4210? Do you think the Kubota is better built? Just curious.

The 4210 has become an instant loved member of the family.

It will be great at cleaning up the messes I make with the
bigger Kubota. No backhoe so I can jump implements all day
long. Front Forks, Rear Forks, Rake, Blade, BoxScraper, PostHole (tree-hole) Digger,
Long Boom, Rotary Cutter and whatever else I can save up for and somehow
justify buying.

I just about broke out laughing when I popped the front forks on
and then the bucket and then the forks again, all in minutes,
maybe seconds! All of the small tractors are slowly getting
the cool "big-boy" toys. I'll bet sooner or later we'll be
seeing quick attach backhoe buckets!

I have a bigger Kubota and have a Ford (Shibaura, NH) that is just a titch
bigger then the JD. I've had it for 20 years. I hope the Kubota
and the JD hold up as well. I spent a lot of time looking
before I went with this size and brand. For me it's perfect.

Lots of little bugaboos I'll have to fix, seatbelt I can never
seem to find or get latched. Just like my Kubota BX, belt
falls down under/behind the seat and other end is not stiff
enough to latch all the time with gloves on. You want the
seatbelt to be super easy.

Work lights shine right in my face when I get off of tractor
so I'm temporarily blind but that can be fixed. Have to figure
a way to have headlights without the flashers, very distracting
when I'm on my own property! Need a FOPS canopy.

This is the most comfortable thing I have ever sat on for hours
on end, speaking of that seat, do any of you know what the
mystery button is that is not shown in the manual?

This 4210 is a little different, is a recent production one,
steering wheel is different, has the newer hydro pump that
is same as the 4310 or so I've been told, seat also has
another yellow button to turn, like a small version of the button
with the turn lever. It looks from the diagram on the knob
that it is a seat recliner but doesn't seem to do anything
when turned?

I think because of the redesigned hydraulic pump the loader
is faster, the loader on the Kubota L35 is fast but this is so
fast at idle it is weird. Luckily, the loader control is
a high quality unit with lots of feel to it which makes it
easy to control things. That first time I hit it though
is always a surprise.

So to sum up, yes I'm very happy with this tractor now that
I've been running around with it.

The things I want to alter on this are minor, there used to
be a Kubota owner on TBN, Mark Chalkley, who I think sold
his Kubota and bought a JCB or EarthForce? machine. With his
Kubota he altered just about everything to get what to him
was the perfect setup.

HEY DEL !!!

What's with all the posts you have been making recently??
Did you get a new computer for Christmas (like me) so you are playing with your new toy all the time (like me).

I don't get any real smoke out of my 4210 upon startup just the scent for a while, as I drove heavy diesel trucks for many years prior to retirement and sometimes when I start up my JD the odor takes me back to my former job.

Good question about that mystery control on the seat I don't know what it is for. I love my 4210 just wish it had a bigger toolbox and a right side step to match the left one, plus some power ports. Many 4310 owners think the 4210 is underpowered but since I will never run a backhoe or need the extra hydraulic output I didn't see the need to buy more power than I needed....so far I have always run out of traction long before I ran out of power.

Had a couple of days off so was using the tractors. A lot
of questions came up so I thought I'd put them out to see
what comments I get.

I ordered this tractor with one pair of ports that operate
with a lever below the 3pt lever, and also added the power
beyond conversion (2 ports) at the rear so I can add something that
has it's own valve later like maybe a 3pt hydraulic
post hole digger or something else, and also in case I
want to put a backhoe on which I have no plans to do.

At time of purchase the hydraulic mods are pretty cheap
and can be a hassle later but still doable. I think it
works out to be the cost of the kit plus free installation.

Actually the power beyond has 3 ports which I don't under
stand unless it's an extra return. Will worry about that in
the future.

You probably read my goofy-manual posts, there's another one
I find weird. Somewhere it says to only use a trailer without
brakes if it weighs less than 1.5 times the weight of the
tractor. So that means I can put an unbraked trailer weighing
4500 pounds behind this. It also says to keep weight under
4.5 times the weight of the tractor if the trailer has brakes.

Wow, I can put a 12,000 trailer behind this! From 22hp?
That seems just a little bit more then I would try! On
this; Deere is REALLY optimistic.

I think my Kubota L35 is rated to tow a 3500lb trailer!

GO DEERE!

The 4210's a little smaller, lower and shorter then the
4310 and that's fine by me. I usually am looking at size,
really wheelbase, I can't imagine looking at a 4310's size
and not going for a 4410 which is identical, sizewise.

By power ports I refer to electrical sockets for plug in spotlites, chargers , etc. I have 3 SCV's with no need for more of those. Concur with you on the oddball printing in the manual, if the oil light comes on you are supposed to race the engine....? Dumb idea.

Owners manual also lists drawbar tongue weight capacity at 562 lbs. for all 4210-4410 models. Deere publishes a Govermental Bid Spec Booklet, and that one lists capacity at 771 lbs. for the 4210 and 881 lbs. for the 4310/4410. As I wanted to use my tractor to move a 7000 pound travel trailer with a 700 lb. tongue weight I checked with my salesguy and he told me 800 lbs was okay but don't go very fast.

I did not find that getting a 4400 over the 4300 was a big improvement so I got the 4300. It's not like the 4400 or 10 has an added cylinder or something to the engine to give it noticeable amounts of power gain. Now comparing the 4300 to the 990 the 990 has tons more power and idles a little smoother too.

I have a 4210. I added the 3rd SCV myself - it is NOT free installation after the fact! I called 2 of my local dealers and they both quoted around $300 for installation. The kit cost $200.

It took me a full Saturday to install, but it wasn't too bad. Worst part is getting the seat off and on.

Andyny,

I meant to say it was the cost of the kit with free
installation if done at time of purchasing tractor,
which is why I had things added I don't need right
now.

That one has puzzled lots of folks. It contols the seat's travel, how far it goes up and down. Be sure that you are on the seat when you adjust it. I managed to break mine turning it while off.

If the 4210 had had the new hydraulics when I bought, I might be driving one, too. Actually, there are about three times too many models. But what do I know?
