My neighbour has a John Deere 212 lawn tractor and no operators manual. It has a manual transmission so the hydraulics have a separate reservoir under the hood. Does anybody know which oil to use in the hydraulics. Thanks

The dealer told her to use 80w-90. I said I was pretty sure that was wrong.

Thanks for the replies and the link to the service manual. I tried to find a copy of the owners manual online but they all wanted money so I figured I would try here.

My 212 is a 73 no hydraulic oil. The trans used the 80w-90.

Yep, that's "Gear-box" type oil, which a transmission is. My slasher mower and rotary tiller gear boxes call for 80W90... the tractor's HST, so it's hydraulic fluid.

This 212 model apparently has a hydraulic lift that uses its own pump and hydraulic reservoir. Therefore it should have hydraulic fluid, and not gear oil.. IMO. It came as an option to the standard mechanical lift. Would be a mistake to put gear oil in this reservoir, I'm thinking.
