Gary,
I'm glad you didn't have any leakage problems with your original battery. Starting the tractor was never the problem. And if it was, I have a upright charger and could get the tractor started if that were the only problem. However, since I had gone through 3 of the StrongBox batteries from Deere (don't know how much they cost, they were all replaced under warranty) and they had all leaked and corroded causing damage to the battery tray and oil lines, I wasn't content to do any more experimenting. It didn't seem prudent to risk hundreds (or more) dollars of damage to battery trays, oil lines, oil cooler, radiator, frame, etc. to save a few dollars on a battery. I know from previous off-roading experience that the Optima batteries are as tough as they advertise. I don't even know how much the battery was, in total. I know it was $95.00 + shipping. Think it ended up around $115.00. I know this battery won't spew acid and they are extremely durable in high vibration installations. It is a deep cycle battery so will stand up to long periods of non-use better than standard starting batteries and if I have to buy a new one every four years, I'll consider it very cheap insurance.
