I'm trying to finalize the loan paperwork for a tractor I'm interested in, and when I called the guy to get the serial number, he rattled off a number like I had never heard before. He's an old man, and no matter what I asked him, I couldn't get a clear answer from him as to what was what.

I need the year and serial number. It's a John Deere 955, and he did tell me that some of the numbers were from the loader (he just didn't seem to know which). Can anyone help me make heads or tails of this?

As near as I can tell, that serial number was used on an early model IND4PJ nucular bomb model year 1946. It was originally designed to be dropped on Germany, but was lost for the last 59 years in the Nevada desert. Nice find!

Well, I'm in Michigan, so I guess it was WAY off course.

If you have a Deere dealer to work with, then they can look up that number and give you the particulars of when it was sold, and any follow-up that is logged into their computers.

I got a good chuckle out of the 'bomb' explanation /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

ok, so apparently none of these numbers are the serial. One is the loader, and the other is the engine.

Anyone know where the serial number for a 955 is located?

The tractor serial number should be at the rear of the tractor below the pto and above the drawbar.

serial number should be located on a plate just below the rear PTO shaft (not the best place!)

Thanks for the tips. I drove over there last night to check it out myself again, and all that's under the pto is two empty rivet holes.

I did find some numbers stamped into the frame on the rear, left of the PTO, 6 digits, starting with a 2, but hard to read. Also, the plate on the oil pump in the back has some overspray on it, as if the whole rear had been replaced, repainted, and perhaps the serial not transfered?

Other then that suspicious bit, everything looks great, and seems like a deal I don't want to pass up, but something about that tag seems fishy. The old man is a retired guy that has a bunch of heavy macinery and tractors on a farm lot. seems like a decent operation, but what do I know? He claims that the owner bought it and used it for a couple years , then died, and he's selling it for the wife.

Should I pass? or can this stuff happen? I want the tractor, but not if it's going to cause me problems with maintenance and possible resale.
