1956 John Deere 420U
Hello;

New user here, I now have a JD 1956 420U for pushing snow and hauling firewood. I want a new compact tractor with 4WD but, with 2 kids in college, the new machines are out of reach. I'm looking at a used 1984 JD850 with 4WD, hoe and loader but it slips out when traveling in high range. It works fine in low range. Can anyone tell me if this is a serious repair or just an adjustment needed?

Thank you

I had a 790 that did this. The detent that holds the shifter in place was bad . The 1 your looking at might have a broken spring in there as well. My spring was fine but the actual shift handle was machined wrong and it would jump out in High range under heavy load. If I remember they had to split the tractor to fix it. But it was under warrenty and they went thru everything to make sure it was right and may have not needed to do so.
I hope this helps.

Jim
