Anyone know the technique, trick, secret or special tool needed to remove the boom cylinder on a 1992 JD 310d backhoe/loader?

I know this isn't a "tractor" question, but I am trying to help my neighbor get the cylinder out to put in a new seal kit.

I assume you are talking backhoe boom cylinder and not loader. Most backhoes, I stretch the dipperstick out and lower everything down but put some blocking under the boom near the dipperstick hinge point to hold it up slightly above bottomed out. Shut off the engine and relieve all the pressure on the cylinders by cycling control levers through all functions. Then you should be able to remove both clinder pins and slide the cylinder out enough to disconnect hoses before sliding all the way out. That cylinder will be pretty heavy, so two people would help or a nylon strap wrapped around the cylinder using a cherry picker or some other type of overhead hoist. Good Luck!
