Have JD 50 which has set for over a year - cant get to run

gets gas to carb and fire to plugs

pulled it and will fire on one piston but the other seems to be sucking oil

what might be the problem and where to start?

valve stuck?

piston rings stuck?

any suggestions?

When you say one cylinder is "sucking oil" what do you mean?

If you pull the spark plugs are both wet with gas after cranking? A lot can be determined from what the plugs look like.

A 50 has a two barrel carb, so if it runs on one side but not the other, it could be that side of the carb is gummed up from old fuel.

If you feel you may have a stuck valve, take off two bolts and remove the tappet cover. Then you can roll the motor over by hand and watch the valves go through the motions.

When We finally pulled it, one cylinder started firing but not the other.
When We stopped We saw black oil around the exhaust pipe/muffler.
That plug is wet like oil.

will a valve stuck open allow oil to enter the piston?

Tractor is about an hour away so I need to schedule a trip.
Will pull the tappet cover and check valves

Didn't know about two barrel Carb - so will check it.

Thanks for the reply
