50 hr oil change

I tackled the 50 hr service this weekend, weather was good, bugs were bad and I had everything I needed. Things went great until the tran oil filter. What fricking hamfisted gorilla put that thing on? I wrecked a strap wrench and several layers of valuable finger skin trying. Then I tried the time tested hammer a screwdriver thru it....bent the driver. Finally, after an hour or so of cursing, thinking and damning the person who installed it I tried a 3/8 18" rachet extension with a pipe on it....it moved...I'd won..without going for a hammer.

I had to be a little creative with the front axle part. I didn't want a 3 l puddle of oil messing up my Eden so I had to figure a way to (reasonably) safely lift the front up enough to get a pan under the front tires. I'm sure there are a bunch of better ways to do this but this worked.

Sorry you lost some skin from your finger. It's good to get it done. I guess I got lucky on my 50 hour oil change on the CK35, filters came off fairly easily. I just made sure I had lots of buckets with old carpet and newspapers for the, Just in Case. Also gave me a good opportunity to look for loose/missing bolts or anything else that needed attention. As far as the bugs go it is that time of year, lots of mosquitoes :smiley_aafz: out our way.

Yeah those front axle drains aren't in the best of locations. I just did the 400 hour service on my tractor. For the front axle, I just lifted it with loader.

The problem for me is the tranny oil (manual). It comes out so fast my drain pans can't keep up with their tiny little holes. Next time, I'm going to find another way.

Not sure what model you have, but on my CK20 manual tranny, I now use the smaller drain plugs back on the rear axle. When I have gotten all of the oil out of these, I tackle the big center drain. Not much oil left after the smaller drains run dry. The smaller drains are much easier to swap catch pans while draining too!

This is an EXCELLENT suggestion. I just did my 50 hour service on my DK40SE HST over the weekend also! I agree with wade that the transmission filter is tighter than a misquetto's butt streched over a rain barrel... DANG!!! I'll post a pic of the tool I made to finally get it loose.. Cut 2 slots in a 1/2" drive sparkplug wrench .. then put a nylon strap in the straps and cinched it around the filter with a BREAKER bar to finally get it to move.

One question I have is my Transmission Filter (Big gray filter on Right side of tractor) came with an O ring in the box ..??? I did not see ANY O rings on the filter, or left on the nipple?? So I just put the new filter on and everything works great.. no leaks?? Now the yellow filter on the left side of the tractor DID have an O ring that I used...??? Could that O ring in the tranny filter been a mistake from the factory???

PS: I always have a hard time getting the smell of Gear Oil off of my hands ... any suggestions out there?

Mine must be different. There are two large plugs with magnets attached. One in front the other in the back. And there is a third smaller plug. From now on I'm going to drain all I can from the smaller plug. Put it back in, then pull a larger one, one at a time. If you pull two plugs at once the oil really rushes out (as one might expect).

Try mechanics latex gloves. They are made thicker than regular gloves, you can still feel stuff thru them, and your hands clean up with a snap.

I have a small drain plug (painted orange) on each axle, between the tranny and the tires. Guess us little tractor drivers lucked out!

Hi Sandlot

I was wondering if anyone else had a manual ck20. Do you get really good fuel usage. I can work about 20 hrs on a tank, that's without shutting it off when I have to get off to shovel or something.

For the tranny plug I just used a big pan. I still got covered in oil but it took it all in one swallow.

Hopefully, the next time I do this the tran filter won't be so tight. I think thwey installed it then painted over it. I was really starting to wonder how I was going to get it if I ripped the bottom off the filter, luckily its a moot point.

That was the only way I could think of at the time. I didn't have any jackstands or a jack. I agree the smell of gear oil is terrible and it was really hot here so it got everywhere. Luckily I have a shower bag and a lot of rags.

The tranny filter was the worst part of my first change also. I actually believe they put the filter on and then powder coated the frame. I found a plumbers chain wrench worked well to get the filter off, but even with it , it was no fun job.

I crumbled the bottom of the filter before the strap wrench broke. A real strap wrench or chain wrench would have done it.

I dumped the entire 20 l of oil in but I think I still ahve to add some. When cold the oil only comes 1/2 way up the glass. warm fills it tho.
