Hey CK owners. I'm trying to get a solid answer to where you fill your oil on the 20 series. Do you use the red cap on the side of the engine by the injection pump, OR the cap on the valve cover. Correct me if I'm wrong but on the DK series, which I have my understanding is the red cap, NOT the valve cover. Does this vary with the CK series?
Thanks,

CM

I downloaded the CK 27,30,35 workshop manual and it says to fill on top of the valve cover port. Owners manual reads the same. Thanks for posting CM

No problem. But I'm looking for other's experience, and what they do too. Sometimes we've found the literature is not up to date.:confused3:

The manuals are unclear on this, as you may have noticed. The best I can figure is that the big black cap on top of the engine block (which I guess is the valve cover) is for filling. That's where I have filled the oil when I do it. The red cap by the IP is a narrow dipstick port that would be a real pain to fill with, and it goes lower down on the engine, so not sure if it would even work. Red cap dipstick to check oil, cap on top to fill, that's how I do it and so far no issues. Neither is the easiest to get to with the loader on however.

The red cap i have by the fuel bowel looks to be about 3/4 inch in size, a fill port i guess. I couldn't get that cap off. My dipstick is farther below, aft and just below the metal guard panel that is removable.

I feel generous today so here is a link with a copy of the manual: Moved Permanently. Copy and paste this link. Got it from another post here.

That's what I'm talking about, the loader almost, but not quite, makes it impossible to get at. I recall the other one you mentioned, I think its something for the IP or hydro pump.

I have been told by my dealer to use the Orange plug at the injection pump. He has said that you could use the fill at the valve cover, but must pour slowly. If you fill to fast at the valve cover, ( faster than the oil can flow to the pan ) the valve cover can fill with oil, flow through the breather tube to the intake and fill the cylinder whose intake valve is open with oil. At least that's what I was told by dealer.
I also found the loader arm in the way when filling at the injection pump. Now I fully raise the loader, pull up to a tree to block it for safety, dump the oil and then fill.

There have been previous posts about this and the reason is as Amvcane has posted. My 2004 version of the CK30hst only has the valve cover plug for me to add oil. I've done oil changes numerous times, filling slowly, and haven't ever had a problem.

Older CK/DK models did not have the orange oil cap near the IP. Different models converted to the new configuration (red cap on side by IP and stop solenoid on front) at vaious times between 2005 and 2007, I think. You can look at one of the online parts manuals to get the exact serial number when each model went to the new configuration. If you have the side fill port you should use it. If you only have the fill port on top of the valve cover, add oil slowly. If you fill too fast at the the valve cover (flooding the valve cover with oil) it is possible to hydro-lock the engine if oil gets into the intake manifold through the crankcase breather passage. That would be a bad thing.
