Default Ratcheting Sound

Hello all,

Just purchased a new CK 20 HST and have just 5 hours on it. So far, I'm quite happy with the purchase and the tractor has done everything to my satisfaction, given the limited operation time.

I hooked up my new Bush Hog (42") to it the other day and did an hour or two of weed whacking and discovered that when I depressed the clutch to disengage the implement, there was a ratcheting sound eminating from the clutch/transmission area while the implement was still spinning down. I was assured by the dealer that the sound was normal.

Anyone out there with the same experience?

Thanks for your help.

Another newbie.

Mine does the same thing, I immediately disengage the PTO when it does that just doesn't sound good. I have often wondered if using an overriding clutch would prevent this noise.

Your Kay Ten Tye is working as designed. If the racheting bothers you increase the rpms with the hand throttle to match the rpms on the bush hog. And wear some ear protection.

Mine does the same with the MMM also. I just throttle down and disengage the PTO at the same time.

You are not supposed to depress the clutch while running a rear PTO. I heard that noise the first time I used the snowblower. I disengage the rear PTO with the lever and I don't touch the clutch. I only use the clutch to engage the rear PTO.

"You are not supposed to depress the clutch while running a rear PTO."

I didn't know that. I've always engaged the clutch when starting or stopping the PTO. I'll have to try that next time.

I didn't know that either. I clutch when disengaging the PTO and never hear a ratcheting sound.

I always push the clutch down hard to engage and disengage the PTO. I had no idea you could disengage without depressing the clutch. I couldn't find anything in the owner's manual to support or refute but I'll give it a try - I'm sure my foot will appreciate the break . Thanks for the tip.
