I am purchasing a new Grand L 5240. The dealer has a Land Pride FDR1672 for $1,795. He also has either a Woods PRD7200 or 8400 for $2150 and $2500 respectively (including a scalp wheel). First, are these prices good?

Second, I will be mowing about 4-6 acres per week. It is former pasture so there are a number of ruts and ridges. It is certainly not "pool table" level. I have been mowing it with a 42" John Deere lawn tractor and an offset 44" Swisher pull-behind for the last 2 years. For the extra $350, I am considering the 84" model. However, the dealer is suggesting that I will have a lot more scalping with the 84" vs. the 72". Is this true? Obviously, HP is not an issue.

I have a few trees to contend with, but not too bad and I have the lawn tractor for trimming.

Opinions?

Thanks

I scalped several acres and now they are perfectly fine to cut. You could use cheaper blades for the first few cuts and scalp the high spots.

I'd go with the 84".

Good Luck!

I bought a PRD7200 this August and a B7800 (Slightly used 34 hours) and my dealer gave me an $1800 price on the mower. Not suggesting he would have alone, but I am suggesting there may be some wiggle room in your quote. I mow about 6-8 acres of pasture and the 72 inch is fine. I can actually manuever the mower to withing 2 inches of all the fences, something I don't think would be as easy with another foot of mower.

I'd go with the 84". It would seems to me that with this extra witdth it would be even easier to get close to fenses. I wouldn't think scalping would be that much of an issue, especially after the first few times you mow.

I tend to agree with the idea that the wider model would make it easier to get close to fences, etc. Just because it is farther away from your back tire and the tractor doesn't have to be as close.

I have the PRD7200 - bought new this year. It works great, quiet and smooth. My price was exactly what you were quoted and I had at least four other quotes in my area. 2150 is a good price. Common sense tells you that the wider one will scalp a bit more, but that's up to you. Either way, you're getting a great mower.

ETFB,

I have a 90' RFM on my Kubota L3430. With its big turf tires, I wouldn't want any smaller. My mower has enough guage wheels and rollers that scalping is not an issue. I would go with the 8400 ( I assume this is a Rear Finishing Mower-RFM).

I got them down to 2395 on the 7' model (PRD8400).

I upsized from a 6' to a 7' rear mower a couple years ago. Glad I did, I wouldn't want any less mower than the 84".
