Comparison Looking at L4600, Mx5100 and M5140

Tying to work through all the pros and cons for each of these machines and which one would make the most sense for my needs. Primary use will be cutting 20 acres of fairly hilly pasture land, not too steep though and secondary usage would include general maintenance of gravel roadway, fence repair and some work in the woods.

I have driven the hst and gear versions of the Mx and the 4600. I really prefer gear, but can't handle the gear shift between the legs on those models, so if I go with either of those they would have to be hydro. The MX is probably about the right size HP and weight to meet my needs, but I really like the features and feel of the M5140. It may be more than I need, but I am not sure. It sure seems like a lot more tractor for not much more money compared to the MX5100 HST.

Any feedback from current owners of these models or thoughts on the M5140 value vs the others would be very helpful.

Pick your size and price point, they are all good.

I mow a lot more than 20 acres, take care of a mile long drive, several miles of logging roads and skid logs.

All with a L3800DT gear drive.

The 5140 is alot more tractor but in my case it was also alot more money (5000-$6000). I bought the mx 5100 hst and i am very pleased with the work it will do for its size. I do a lot of work in the woods and i often appreciate its smaller frame size. However if you can score a sweet deal on the 5140 it would sure be a hoss!

The quote I got from the first dealer seemed too high on the MX. He quoted right at 30k for the MX HST with loader, R4s and the 3rd function on the loader. Same config on the M5140 was 32k.

I am waiting on quotes from two more dealers. As best I can tell, that MX quote is full MSRP and the 5140 is about 7% off. I think I can do much better.

Weight is your friend in the field and your enemy around the house/yard. If this is for maintaining a farm, get the bigger and heavier farm tractor. If it's for your yard/garden, the L will work better. I have a L3940 and I'm undergunned planting food plots compared to the MX series. However, for fine loader work, tight places, and detail work, my L wins.

Tough call, I really like the MX5100 HST as well as the M5140. The M is definitely more tractor, but I think you will find a significant price difference when people start giving you serious quotes. skipperbrown makes good points, weight can be your friend or enemy depending on your uses. I use our L5740 more than our M8540, but there are times one is just better than the other.

Comparing price/performance, ease of maintenance, needed feature and a utilitarian rig in a package makes it difficult to match MX-5100/4700 for the value. I have purchased and soon to be delivered gear MX-4700 (wanted a naturally aspirated engine), R-4, LA 844 with quick attach and HD bucket (round back) under 22K (cash) and that's a lot of tractor for the money for my need and use. I have driven MX-4700/5100 and L4600( assembled in Thailand). The HST is flawless in all. Shuttle shift on gear works like butta and no grinding and no need to come to a full stop. L4600 does not have a synch main gear where MX-4700/5100 has synchronized 3rd and 4th that makes shift on the fly as easy as passenger cars when you need. L4600 does not have as heavy loader as MX4700/5100. I have not driven L7540 but it specs better than 5100 just due to bigger displacement, tandem lift cylinder for the 3 point and a lot more electronics specially with HST.

Just for reference my mx5100 hst was delivered back in may for $27,600 with loader, ss quick tach, grill guard, rim guard loaded R1's, 3rd function on the loader, and one rear remote
