I was set to order a new L3800 HST with FEL, but one of the local dealers has a 2010 L3940 with 244 hrs on it for about the same price. The 3940 also has extra remotes rear and mid. So which are more valuable, the extras, or the warranty of a new tractor? My use will be on a hilly 125 acre wood lot with some clearings. I'll be maintaining about 3/4 mile of gravel road, roto-tilling an acre or two, bush hogging 5-8 acres, dragging logs, and other general land maintenance tasks. From Kubota's reputation, I'm leaning towards features of the L3940 being worth more then the warranty.

Test drive both. They are different class tractors, see which one you like better. Rear remotes will be nice for rear blade or box blade. 244 hours is nothing. I have had my L3940 since 2009. Bought new with standard warranty, 24 month / 1500 hour bumper to bumper, 36 month / 2000 hour powertrain. Never needed it. Good luck. Philip.

A good used tractor with low hours can be a great value, if you can indeed find a good one. If it was a used and abused rental or someone else's problem child now back at the dealer, well, you'll have to decide. As Phillip says, the L3940 is a bigger tractor that would probably give you some performance advantages over the L3800.

Not even a close call for me, I would take the L3940 if it is in good shape. I usually like to talk to the previous owner and see the maintenance records. I love the HST+, flat deck, cruise control and smoothness of the 3PH; pretty sure the FEL is stronger as well. I also prefer the steering gear, independent PTO, more comfortable seat, tilt steering wheel and so on. Hours on that are so low as to be inconsequential.

If it's a good one I would go for the 3940. I just think it's a better tractor in every way.

I would vote for the 3940. If I had 125 acres I would want the L3940. I have a L3800 right now which is fine for my small place, but for 125 acres I think a larger machine would suit you well.

That 3940 is the way to go if it is in good shape (that's almost NO hours on it). The longer you are in the seat, the MORE the extras mean to you!! Good luck!

Is the 3940 a HST model? If so and in good shape that's the tractor I would go with.

Does the 3940 also have a FEL?

The bigger the tractor the less the hours mean. And usually the bigger the tractor the more it gets used.

Unless you have some specific task (mucking out stalls) that requires a smaller machine go big if you can afford it.
