Looking at getting a little bigger tractor.
With DPF and other emissions, I don't want new.
Looking at a used MX5100, any pros/cons to this model ?
I haven't gone to look at it yet. Dealer is asking 22,900.
Not dead set on this tractor. Just looking around at what's out there right now.

That's within the price range I'd expect at a dealership, depending on the options and condition it's in. They're great tractors with lots of satisfied owners on TBN. I'm very pleased with my MX. For that price it'd be nice if it had under 1000 hours, a loader, HST, and was in good shape, but I guess you don't always get what you want.

My MX5100HST is just what the doctor ordered. Now the wife wants to do my smaller chores:D

All kidding aside, it is an excellent tractor. Not as fancy as the Grand L's but it has a sturdy frame and plenty of power to do all I need and more on my 10 acres.

his web site states 170 hrs, geared transmission. Which would be fine if it has a lever that lets you go from forward to reverse without having to move the gear shift. I need to call and ask about this

That's pretty high for a gear model, in my opinion. Low hoes is nice though. IIRC, the geared MXs have two ranges of 4 gears each. You can shuttle between F and R, but maybe only in low range or something like that. Also, the only synchros are between 3rd and 4th gear in the 4 speed portion, and you always need the clutch to shuttle, unlike a hydraulic shuttle transmission.

Too much money for a gear unit IMO unless it comes with some attachments or a backhoe.

Got my 2012 MX5100 beginning of last summer. Apr 2016ish....so prices should still be similar.

No remotes, no front hydraulics at all. (added later though). Just bare HST tractor and loader with R1's and 340hrs on the clock.

$20k OTD.....so the selling price was closer to $18.5K

Since the one you are looking has a a few less hours....but gear.....if it comes with nothing else I think its about $5k too high.

If you do alot of loader work the HST sure is nice. In you are mainly towing a plow/trailer or field work I can see not really getting much benefit. But bushhogging (which is about 70% of what I do), HST is the only way. Going from a geared tractor to a HST is like going from a garden tractor to a zero-turn for mowing

Well, if I go HST. I'll have to get a larger tractor to get the same HP . I hear the HST takes some of the HP. away
Most of my use will probably be loader/grapple work. I'll use the old yanmar for brush cutting.

We have a 5100 hst and love it. I use it a LOT for loader/grapple work and have never wished for more HP. Cant say I have run out of HP doing anything loader related, sometimes I could use more for running in Med or High up steep hills but otherwise no complaints. Been a great machine!

Lack of HP is really only an issue if running something that requires alot of PTO power, or towing something heavy in high range.

I wish for more power when towing a dump trailer loaded with ~5000# of wood.....total weight of 8000-9000#. No issues towing at all,but you sure notice the slight grades if in High range.

General loader and dirt work and piddling around in low and med range.....no issues at all with a lack of power with the HST

what is the difference in the M vs MX vs L models ?

The dealer list a MX 5100 that is 52 HP.... L 5240 Grand L series, M5040 52 HP ..M5040 52 HP

The 2013--- L5240 he list is 52 HP, HST, 380 HRS, R4 tires (which I really don't want)...23,900
not sure if this 2013 has DPF or not, if it does it's out

The (mod ?) M5040 list 52 HP, dual rear remotes,mechanical shuttle shift,691 HRS, R 4 tires,.... 23,900

The 2012 MX5100 list 52 HP 170 HRS, gear tranny, AG tires (which I want)...... 22,900

All are 4WD with loader
