That's because CA stuff weighs less - don't need the capacity in their CA models.

That is one theory...

If I were to guess it would have something to do with California's often unique legal requirements...

We are special and want everyone to know it... or something like that.

So, it could be the same as having your 12,000 lb trailer derated to 9980 to stay below CDL requirements.

I've seen stuff - usually trailers - derated before. There will be a sticker somewhere saying - rated @ 10,000 pounds payload - except in WA, 8750; CA, 7520; IN, 9250 etc,etc. Nobody was ever able to explain exactly why.

About the most knowledgable reply was - "has something to do with that states motor vehicle laws".

To be sold in California is needs to be CARB compliant. I wonder if it has some differences to get the certification.

Is the fuel injection dialed down for CARB certification?

Given it's carrying capacity not power measurement, I'd guess it's safety rules rather than engine derating.
