I want to share my recent shopping experience for other who might be looking for a small tractor. It's always good to know what other dealers are quoting.

Pricing Info for Kubota BX2230, John Deer JD2210, Massey GC2300 and Cub Cadet 5234D.

I have about 2 acres of lawn and about 8 more acres of field, half of which I'd like to look more like a lawn. One of the fields is a gentle slope, the other is likely too steep to mow horizontally.

I am 90% certain that I will purchase the Kubota BX2230. My quote is as follows:
BX2230 $9915
60" mid-mount mower $1863
LA211 FEL w/48" bucket $2795
Turf Tires $270
Total: $14843
Discount of 15.3% -$2,269
Total w/discount: $12574

Add Woods 60" rear blade for $359 less $54 discount = $305
Add second set of tires/wheels (bar type) $296
New Total with blade and 2nd set tires: $13,175
Financed 3 years at zero percent.
And since I'm buying out of state, no sales tax. I'll ask for free delivery, of course. Also, based on what I've read on this board, I'll probably drop the turf tires altogether and just go with the bar tires.

For a better comparison to the other tractors (below), the price of the Kubota without the blade and second set of wheels/tires is approx $12,575.

Note: I could see the dealer cost on the guy's PC as he was developing the quote. The dealer markup was 27%. Retail price with FEL, MMM and turf tires was $14,843. Dealer profit was right at $4,000 and he discounted his offer by $2,269, so his gross profit was approx $1,731 on his first offer.

JD2210 - I was quoted $10,500 for the 2210 with R3 Turf tires. $1,900 for a 62" MMM with attaching parts, $167 for a front brush guard, $2925 for a 47" JD 2-stage snowblower w/quick hitch and attaching parts, $188 for ballast box, $98 for tire chains, $22 to put fluid in the rear tires, for a total delivered price of $15,800. A 53" FEL was $2,400.
For a closer comparison to the Kubota, drop the snowblower, ballast box, tire chains and fluid, then add in the FEL, the price would be $15,155. That's $2000 higher for the JD, plus the Kubota had a rear blade and an extra set of wheels, so if you drop the extras, the JD costs $2,600 more.

The Massey Ferguson GC2300 was not a formal quote, but here are the numbers I jotted down: $9000 for the tractor, $1800 for 60" MMM, $2800 for loader, $3300 for snowblower. If I outfitted this one the same as the JD2210 (MMM and FEL), the price would have been $13,600. That's approx $1,000 more than a comparably-equipped Kubota.

Cub Cadet 5234D - this quote was from a reputable small-town hardware store, and I believe the prices are all 'List'. $8999 for tractor, $1698 for 54" MMM, $2499 for FEL, $2338 for 48" snowblower. Equipped the same as the JD2210 (MMM and FEL), the price would have been $13,196. That's only about $600 more than the Kubota, but I'd have sales tax to pay. I'd also have excellent service from this guy, and I'm sure I could get the price a little lower than the initial quote.

Overall, the Kubota was the clear price winner here, and from what I've read, it has perhaps the second best reputation (next to JD). The 3-year 0% financing was better than Massey Ferguson (2 year 0%, 3 year .9%....which is still excellent). The Cub Cadet dealer wanted 6.99% for 3, 4, 5 or 6 years.

I also looked at Chinese tractors but decided that I really preferred a hydrostatic transmission and cruise control since my primary use will be mowing on hilly terrain.

I was wondering if I 'deserved' a tractor, since I only have 10 acres. Then I read posts from lots of people with only one, or one and a half acres. Now I wonder if I should get a bigger tractor :)

Your comments are WELCOMED, as I haven't made my decision yet. A neighbor of mine just put his 1998 Honda 6522 up for sale. It has 398 hours on it, includes a 60" MMM, Curtis cab and 60" snowblower plus rear weight kit. He's asking $10k - says he paid $19k for it. Sounds high to me. That snowblower would sure be nice for my 600' steep driveway though.

....with 10 acres, I would consider something bigger. The comfort difference on the larger tractors cannot be overstated. The midframe tractors are like sitting in an easy-chair /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif While I love my JD 4100, if I had to do it over, I would either get a BX23 (due to the BH) or go for a larger JD for comfort.

I got my BX2230 about two weeks ago and can't find enough time to use it. Your pricing on the Kubota is good -- even better with no sales tax. You won't regret getting the Kubota. I looked at and liked the Cub but my local CC dealer leaves something to be desired.

As far as thinking about moving up, I've got 15 acres and will put my tractor through the paces but I have no doubts that it is up for almost whatever I can throw at it, especially after reading on this site and others what people are doing with their S-CUT's.

Enjoy!

I'm also looking at the Massey Ferguson 1528. It's longer, wider, 1000 pounds heavier, comes with a 72" MMM and automatically switches between 2wd and 4wd, which would be nice for my hilly terrain when mowing. It's a bit pricey.

And since I'm buying out of state, no sales tax. > There is still sales tax, you owe it to the state you live in.

The Massey Ferguson GC2300 would have been $13,600.
That's approx. $1,000 more than a comparably equipped Kubota>> I would love to have a GC2300 but not at more money than a Kubota.

I also looked at Chinese tractors >>> I wouldn't even consider one of them.

Turf Tires $270>>>> Save your money the A/Gs that come standard are all you need.

He's asking $10k >>>>> What is the total cost after adding interest?

For 10 acres I would not count out the larger B series tractors (B7510, 7610 or even 7800). They will be a little more money comparably equipped, but the comfort level for that much driving will be better. (My one regret.)

I still really like my BX, don't get me wrong. For the amount of property you have there, a bigger chassis may be in order.

Just an FYI, I am not sure exactly how your salesmen worked up the numbers but his gross profit will be probably just about half of what you saw.

I may be a little biased, but my 7510 seems to be a great in betweener....it mows with the quality of a smaller tractor, and yet has the ground clearance and some of the big tractor benefits like a good FEL capacity and the ability to have a backhoe. 10 acres might warrant even something larger like a 7800.
