Hi,

I am a newbie to the forum and the idea of purchasing a tractor. First, let me say I have learned a lot lurking on this forum for the last several weeks, but I know I still have a lot to learn. I have about 6.5 acres of land. The land is probably about 1.5 acres lawn, 3 acres field and 2 acres woods. The lawn is relatively flat, the fields have flat and some moderately sloped areas and the wooded terrain is varied. I already have a lawn tractor for mowing my lawn that does an adequate job. I would like a compact utility tractor for moving material from point “A” to point “B”, snow removal, mowing fields and trails in the woods, etc. I’m also considering a backhoe attachment. I originally looked at the BX24 and it seems like a great machine, but I think I would be concerned with ground clearance in the woods. Now I am focusing on the “B” series, in particular the B7610. No offense to any BX owners, but it seems like a much beefier machine. A dealer in my area (Southern Maine) quoted me a new B7610 w/ LA352 loader for $13,500. That seemed like a good price. I didn’t try to haggle at all (yet). The other attachments I am considering are a back blade and brush hog type mower. Not sure how much this will add to the price. I would like to have the backhoe too, but I’m not sure if I would use it enough to justify the cost. I know I have planted a lot of trees by hand, like big sugar maples with 200 .lb rootballs and my back hurt for days. I ain’t getting’ any younger. Plus it would be nice for other digging projects, stump removal, trenching and drainage, etc. He said the loader and backhoe would bring it over $18,000. I am not in any rush to buy; my time frame is 6-12 months. I plan on having about $8,000-$10,000 in cash and finance the rest. So, I’m looking for input on the B7610 or similar models and advice on attachments, thanks.

WOW, you in exactly the same place I was. My property is almost exactly the same as yours. I started out looking at the B7610 and I wanted the hoe as well. I to do my lawn and snow removal with my lawn tractor. Well after all the time I spent hear and a year looking and thinking and dreaming. I decided to skip the hoe and go for the 4 cylinder B7800 with forks, PHD and a toothbar. I figured I would rather have the power and if I need a hoe there cheep enough to rent for as often as I will need 1. Good luck in your search for what you need. Tractors are a personal item, be sure to get the 1 you really want rather than settle for less power to get an attachment that you will get sooner or later anyway

As Timber stated he jumped up and a good jump because of the three range transmission for better ground speed in between jobs! Prices aren't that much different.

I'll add my $.02 worth here. When I started looking for my 'first' tractor I originally was looking at the BX24. I was taken aback by the cost of a tractor to begin with (mine is worth more than my truck right now). Anyway, I live on 18 acres of woods... all woods and I needed something to maintain my trails for hiking/biking/x-c skiing as well as snowblow my 1000' driveway (no plow for me, thank you), haul firewood, and possibly dig up the occasional stump.

After much contemplation I decided, based on the advise of this forum, to jump up to the next model. I started with the 7410 and quickly moved to the 7510. Because of the price difference I then figured I'd go up to the 7610. Yes, the 7800 was an option but I had to stop adding to the price and the 7610 looked like a nice machine, again, based on what I read here. Remember, this was all still in my head since I hadn't even visited a dealer yet. I was looking at JD, Mahindra, and Massey also.

I went to each dealer (three different Kubota dealers and the other three brand dealers) and I told them what I was looking for. Two of the three Kubota dealers recommended the B7610 without hesitation... and I didn't even hint as to what I was looking for. It was that and the test drives that made up my mind for me!

I've been more than happy with the 7610 since I've had it (April). Although I haven't used it much, only 18 hrs, I've hauled a ton of wood, cleared some brush on the trails, and even dug up a few stumps with the bucket of all things. It takes a bit longer but it does the job with no problem. I've plucked some 10" tree stumps out of the ground with it in about 1/2 hour. I thought about the backhoe but figured if I was well prepared, I could rent one several times and still not come close to the cost of purchasing one. Besides using the bucket to dig up stumps I've repaired my driveway by installing several drain pipes across it. I dug trenches with the bucket about 6" deep. I realize they tell you the bucket digging depth is 3" or something but I've been able to get down 6" without a problem. I think the one thing that amazed me was when I picked up the end of a 3' dia. tree trunk that was about 20' long and moved it like it was a toothpick. I couldn't believe the power! I would definitely recommend it to anyone in my situation and, I believe, in yours.

Here in the Albany, NY area the B7610 with the 352 FEL, loaded tires, and a block heater was $13000 in April... purchased a front snowblower this summer for $2500 (bit expensive, I know). I borrow the brushhog and a chipper from a neighbor. It's nice to live next to a farm!

Good luck hunting. Go to the dealers and test them out! Get the one that you feel most comfortable on.
And on another subject, you live in a beautiful area! I vacation in Wells each year and absolutely love the coast as well as inland Maine. People are great there!

Welcome,

I have had my B7610 for two years and 250 hours. I have the LA352 loader, 2750 front blower, 60" mid mount mower, 60" front blade, spreader, box blade, PHD, and probably a few other things. It handles them all well. However, if I had it all to do over again, I might take a closer at the B7800 just for the increased mower size (72" VS. 60" on the finish, 5' VS 4' on the rough cut). But all in all no regrets.

Good Luck

I'd like to echo what KillerB stated.

I'm very happy with my B7610, though there are times that I'd like to have the little extra weight for digging out stuff, and the extra HP to run a 72" mower.
