BX1500
OK I need help I am no farmer I do have a BX 1500 Kubota and it is a great tractor but I need to till about an 1-2 inches of soil, get rid of moss, put seed down fertilizer down. I have a drop seeder for the seed and fertilizer.

So I have two questions:
1. Do they have tillers that will only till about 1-2 inches of soil?
2. Where could I rent a tiller?

Help me:confused:

Couple ways to go. Have you thought about just pulling a spike tooth or spring tooth drag around and around?

If your soil isn't super tough clay, it shouldn't take very much to accomplish what you're going for. I can show you some photos of what I"m talking about if you're unfamiliar with what a harrow is.

Three point tractor driven tillers normally have "feet" that are adjustable that control the depth of till. Mine adjusts from one to six inches. The feet slide along holding the tiller at the depth set.

Most rental yards that rent implements will not have a tiller small enough or have the PTO shaft cut down short enough to fit the BX1500. You will have tro look in the phone book for rental yards.

Which is why I suggested an alternative to a tiller. Unless the soil is extraordinarily hard, scratching it up with a harrow might just provide a simple solution.

Problem with ground engaging type attachments on a BX is by the time you get one heavy enough to scratch hard ground, you have run out of traction. This is why the rotary hoes were invented for the smaller tractors.

Depends on the soil conditions, as has been said. A BX can "engage" the ground pretty good, given the right circumstances. There's photos and video of guys using BX's to plow, using turning plows here on TBN. I dunno.

I used a middle buster and plowed up a 1/2 acre garden plot, breaking into virgin soil with my BX. It did OK. Then, I dragged a field cultivator over that ground. Mind you, our soil is not clay. Just scratching up an inch or two for re-seeding isn't as that difficult. I completely agree with you. The likelihood of the OP finding an appropriate 3 pt tiller to rent, that a 1500 can run, is worse than trying to draw into an inside straight. :D

Here's just a few photos of my old BX1860 (a comparable machine) doing it's thing in the dirt.

I've used a tiller on my BX2230 and had some difficulties with it. It would buck like a bronco every rock and stick it would hit. After a while, it just felt a little inefficient.

I ended up grabbing a few beers and drove around and around...and around...and around...and around...and around...and around with my box blade scarifiers set 2 inches deep. If I had a York Rake, I would have used one to tidy up. But I didn't, so I raked it myself and HATED EVERY SECOND. I'm going to nuke my lawn next season and will purchase a York Rake for that project.

I also own a middle buster, like Mr. BP Fick, and that would be splendid for running crop rows. Not particularly efficient for turning a bunch of dirt, though.

Another item I'd REALLY like is a small set of XD disc harrows from Tractor Supply. That would probably do a really kick butt job on the first couple of inches.

Personally, I'm not messing around with tiller attachments any more. Thought I wanted one until I used one. Great for some things, but not for all things.

I have a 3P York Rake...I love that thing, does a great job and wouldn't be without it. I have a 6 footer which might be a little big for a BX, but it handles it fine.
