DUCK,
Both the starter switch and headlight combo switch are subject to
water and dirt entry. If I recall, you can not turn on the headlights
unless the starter switch is on. That is why the combo switch has a
connection to the starter switch.

Replace at least your starter switch (about $60). Then you will also have
the ability to use the glow plug position (counter clockwise from OFF).

Oh yeah, don't let water get into the new switch(es). Good Luck.

This sounds like a bad connection from the battery. You said that you changed the negative cable so that connection should be tight. I would check the positive cable where it bolts to the starter and make sure the connection is clean/good.
