It looks like I'll be buying a used Woods M4 brush mower for my BX. The salesman said I may need to shorten the driveshaft. Its the kind with a square shaft in the middle with a hollow tube on the outside. If it does need shortned would I just take a sawz-all and cut off what I need?

don't forget that when you go thru a deep ditch the shaft first shortens then needs to be long... as tractor pulls out and implement is still in the ditch.... thus, don't cut too much off else shaft will separate when pulling over a bump/out of a ditch.

Measure twice...cut once.:D

I just picked up the brush mower. It hooks up the way it is, but the two halfs are most of the way together, so I will shorten it up a little.

The manual should give you instructions on the proper way to size a PTO shaft. You need to hook up with the PTO shaft tubes side-by-side and raise/lower the implement to where the distance between the implent input shaft and the tractor output shaft are the shortest. Mark it with a marker or something. Raise/lower the implement until the input and output are the furthest away from each other then measure the distance between the two marks you made previously. There should be at LEAST 6". If it's not 6", you've got a problem.

If you have 6", then remove and cut the shields first for both sides. THen use the shield peices as templates for how much to take off both ends of the PTO shaft.

Messing up the PTO shaft can be dangerous. Know what you're doing, or take it to the dealer to have it sized.

Don't go just whacking off length...if you didn't get instructions on the right way to do it go download this manual- it has instructions in it for any PTO shaft cutting starting on about page 16>
