I have an older L235 when I engage the pto with a brushcutter it grinds the gears but is ok with the backhoe pump also there is a flip down stopper on the clutch pedal Ive tried it with it up or down no difference any ideas?

I would say try holding the clutch in for 10-15 seconds or so before trying to engage the pto and see if that makes a difference. My thought is it may give the internals some time to slow down. Don't know if you have a clutch brake on the pto or not, but it could be worn allowing things to coast to a stop instead of quickly stopping. Just an idea.

PTO engagemennt is probably normal, but you could try slowing the transmission down by sticking the tractor into gear first.

The clutch lever is so when mot in use the disc doesn't sieze to the pressure plate and flywheel so it doesn't work!

You could find posts here about tractors that have some issues with it like the older fords.
