I was tilling some hard rocky ground and my Kubota tiller locked up. Got the wood out of the tines and back to tilling. Tilled more and tiller quit tilling. Tines are free and turn free and pto turn tiller shaft but tines don't turn now when shaft turns.
Sure it's clutch type. Has a bunch of nuts over springs going into gear box. Both Fliud fillers are full.

You could try taking up the bolts on the slip clutch but you also could have ruined the discs. Try tightening the slip clutch first!

When you turn the PTO shaft, does it turn the input shaft to the gearbox on the top of the tiller?
I would suspect that the issue is the gears/chain going from the upper shaft down to the tine shaft and that your slip clutch may not have slipped like it should have when you hit the piece of wood.

If it has a chain check it.

Expect some real greasy oily hands.

It should be under the cover on the left side when sitting on the tractor. Or just by the tape measure in the pictures.

Might want to check out the slip clutch for proper settings after you get the chain fixed.

What is taking up the bolts? Is taking up the bolts the same thing as tighening the slip clutch?n

It slipped, stopped the tines from turning as it had a few times before when it hit rocks but after stopping and the rocks fell out the tines returned to turning. It didn't with the wood until I stopped and knocked the wood out then it continued to work fine for another 30 minutes until it just quit turning the tines.

How does one check out the slip clutch settings?

Do a search On TBN as there are numerous threads giving detailed instructions.:D

I take this to mean that if you restrain the tiller blades so they can't spin you can still turn the PTO shaft? If the PTO shaft (tractor end) spins, but the stub end going into the tiller's gearbox doesn't, then you have a clutch problem. If the stub end turns with the PTO shaft, then it's time to take the cover off the chain drive, like Egon suggested, and see who's turning or not turning in there.

Tiller tines turn free and easy. All top shafts and stub end turn free and easy. No resistance turning tines or shaft and neither one makes the other turn.
ooks like chain guard cover removal time. Is there a gasket that has to be replaced when I remove the cover and reinstall it? Want to be prepared to reinstall it before I take the cover off.

Don't know about the gasket but on mine silicon worked well.:D

If it has a chain you can buy the components to splice it. You should also check the chain for overall wear.

Seems I recall a measurement of 12 inches pin to pin and if its much over a new chain is best??:confused:
[This measurement may be for a specific size chain??]

You may want to make sure that the slip clutch is still attached ie some tillers like yours had a slip clutch that was held in place with a shear bolt on the back side. Not saying this is the case with yours but would be a easy to overlook the simple.
Hope its a easy fix for you.
