Kubota M9040
I have a new M9040 4-wheel drive hydro-static transmission with less than 25 hours total time. The tractor produces an intermittent, but consistent "hissing" or "whistling" noise that is coming from the upper right-hand side of the engine compartment firewall. The noise comes and goes and seems to be related to and aggravated by increasing engine rpm slightly above idle. I've repeatedly been able to stop the noise by applying the brakes 3 to 4 times, either with both pedals together or either pedal separately. The noise goes away completely for about a minute but always returns. I can always clear the hissing noise by tapping the brakes several times. The noise definitely sounds like air hissing through a leaky hose. Curious if anyone has had similar experience or a recommendation before I go through the trouble of hauling this tractor back to the dealer. Thanks.

Sounds to me like regular turbo charger related noises. Not sure what the brakes have to do with it though. I wouldn't worry about it.

Have you asked your dealer about the noise??????

Thanks for the reply guys. I have asked my dealer about it and I'm waiting on a response from him. Although the tractor only has about 25 hours on it, the noise just started recently and was not present during the first 20 hours or so. Additionally, I drove two other brand new M9040 units at the dealership and neither one of those two made this very distinct noise.

When I bought my 8540 back in 2009, mine was making the same kind of noise you describe except it was coming from the right hand fender under the hydraulic levers. After trying to find out what it was, turned out to be the hydraulic valve for the remotes. Playing wiht the levers, I was able to make the noise stop, but it would come right back soon as I let them "rest" in their natural position. Guess something was out of adjustment or there was something preventing the valve from closing completely.

Called the dealer and he said go ahead and put some hours on it and if it didn't go away, they would find out what was going on. After doing the 50 hour service, it seemed to make it go away. Not sure this is your issue being that it's coming from under the hood, but might be worth ruling out it.

Both my present Kubota's 'hiss' but it's coming from the transmission case in the rear. It's the back pump circulating fluid..... normal sound

If you have an under the hood 'hiss', I'd take a quick look at the pressurized side of the turbocharger, the rubber hose from the turbo to the intercooler and from the intercooler to the intake. Loose clamps will cause a hissing sound when the turbo pressurizes the piping. No biggie.

Thanks for the replies guys. I previously checked the hydraulic valves to see if operating them had any effect on the noise but they do not. My M9040 has three additional optional valves as well and I checked them also. I will definitely check the turbo-charger lines but it's for certain that pumping the brakes stops the hissing (at least for a minute or two). Appreciate everyone's help very much.

I'm not familiar with the kubota M9040 with hydrostatic transmission, is this something new? I know that Kubota offers the M9540 with a hydraulic shuttle transmission, is that perhaps what you have?

My bad. I have several tractors and I'm bad about mixing up terminology. You are correct. The M9540 has a hydraulic shuttle transmission. And yes it's the 9540. I'm bad about typos with my iPad key-board. Sorry for any confusion.

The last company that offered a domestic hydro in an ag tractor was IH and that was years ago. We knew your didn't, or at least I did and probably a few others too.....
