some time ago i started searching for information regarding block heaters for my BX25. for one reason or another i found a variety of threads with more questions than answers and varying opinions on part numbers and installation locations. so here goes, from my experience today, to put the information of a confirmed successful installation into one place. i only wish that i had taken pictures along the way.

tractor:
60-series BX25 (purchased new 12/2011)

engine:
D902 (same as BX2350)

block heater part no.:
70000-00771 (400W & made in canada as per stamping on the unit)

installation location:
left-hand side of engine in the forward freeze plug location (furthest from injection pump)
(it is the same position as better visualized in THIS POST - a useful post for heater removal info, BTW)

orientation:
electrical pins aligned vertically; there was a dot on my heater for TDC
(the heater will NOT fit and will likely be damaged if installed with pins oriented horizontally)

shop materials used:
acetone (to clean mating surfaces before installation)
loc-tite 37509 (clean/prime)
loc-tite 243 (sealant)
dielectric grease (added between rubber connector and heater to prevent moisture intrusion and corrosion)
high-heat spray paint

the installation was pretty straightforward. after removing the engine cowl and draining the coolant i knocked out the appropriate freeze plug (remember to strike it in the outer edge of the depression - don't try to hit the very edge where it meets the block to avoid the risk of scoring the block). i then soaked up some remaining coolant from the block, cleaned the mating surfaces of the block and heater with acetone (brake cleaner would probably also work well), coated them with 37509 primer, coated them with 243 sealant and drove the heater in with a 1" socket. i painted the heater with some high heat paint and installed the electrical connector after coating it with dielectric grease. i flushed and refilled the coolant (i paired this install with the bi-annual service). no leaks. all looks good. i would certainly recommend painting the heater. mine had already started developing surface rust as it sat on the shelf between the time that i received it and got around to installing it.

it doesn't get that cold here and i run synthetic engine oil but i like the idea of reducing cold-start stress when possible.
