Hi there I'm new around here. I have a m7040 and currently I'm doing some mowing around my 110 acre property.

Question is what speed are you guys travelling while using your flail mowers? I have found mid range 3rd gear to give a good cut and top range 1st gear to be to fast. I wish i had an in between gear.

Nathan.

I cut with a Ford 918h 90" flail behind my 52 HP HST tractor.

If the grass is above 12 inches, I'm usually traveling between 3 and 4 miles per hour; if the grass is shorter than that, I'm usually cutting between 5 and 6 miles per hour.

There seems to be quite a difference in Flail Mowers. What mower are you using??

Not being familiar with that model, is it forward rotation or reverse rotation?

Cuts from back to front.

Cuts from back to front.

So the knives are rotating the opposite of the tractor tires when driving forward??

That type mulches very well. How well depends on speed. Considered Reverse Rotation.

Mine rotate forward. Very little mulching. Can run 7 mph if material is short. Tall, tough material, speed slows dramatically. To get a good cut in those conditions I'll be down to 3 mph.

I should add then for reference ... Mine is reverse rotation

I think most are. Wish mine was for the mulching ability. :)
