JEFFERSON, Ga.--Kubota Manufacturing of America officials announced Tuesday plans to build a new manufacturing plant about 25 miles south of its Gainesville plant in Jackson County.

The company, a unit of Kubota Corp. (KUB, NYSE), makes lawn tractors, loaders and backhoes.

The 400,000-square-foot plant will be on 88 acres in the McClure Industrial Park off Interstate 85. The company will hire about 500 people to manufacture loaders and backhoes for tractors.

Construction on the plant is set for November, with production to start in the fall of 2005. The production level is projected at 70,000 units a year.

Kubota is the second major Japanese-owned manufacturing operation to announce plans this year to locate in Jackson County.
