Was mowing pasture on Saturday (pull type shredder) when I noticed my lift arms were down in spite of the control lever being up. Took off the inspection panel under the seat thinking the linkage might be disconnected but the control arm/shaft appears to be rotating properly all the way up to the casting/housing. The FEL is working fine and the hydraulic fluid is clean and right in the middle of the sight glass. Any ideas on what to check next?

Dismantled it to find out what was wrong (local dealer was backed up several weeks on repairs). First step, remove loader and all the sheet metal.

When it was stripped to this point I could reach down into the "guts" of the tractor and I started to pull out large and small pieces of metal. How bad was it going to be???

The casting which the 3 point piston rod pushes against had failed. I was able get out all of the metal chips and piston rings but I could not find the roll pin. I later located the roll pin when I changed the filter.

The piston was then pushed out of the bore and bounced around in the gearing before coming to a rest in a "safe" part of the gear case. It was not reusable but the tractor's gears looked great.

The inside of the housing that retains the PTO shaft rear bearing took a good hit from the piston or rod but I chose not to replace the PTO housing. The bearing is set back from the damage enought that I think I will be all right.

The new parts/pieces ran about $150 and were easy enough to install. I tapped the new piston in with a 2x2. After it was all reassembled I readjusted the external rod that runs from under the seat back to the left side lift arm. Works great. Now I have about a month of tractor work to catch up on.

hans; Good post! I always wondered what that part of a tractor looked like. Congrats on solving your problem. One question, how come your hands aren't dirty? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Clean hydraulic fluid really does not stain that much and I kind of like the smell. I found it infinitely better working with hydraulic fluid than with axle grease or my least favorite which is gear oil. I really dislike the way 80-90 weight gear oil smells. I also went thru a gallon of 409 cleaning all of the exterior parts. Working with clean parts almost turns the work into fun.

Hans…
OUCH, What do you think caused that to fail?
Your L3300 is the same as my L4200. I do hope to NEVER see inside mine. To get to that I am sure I would need to remove or at least raise my cab… Another thing I hope never to have to do. Nice photos, Thanks for the look at what I don’t want to see. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif KennyV.

I am clueless on what caused it. Tractor has 800+ hours; only hypothesis dealer had was a failed pressure relief valve. I don't think so. The lift arms were bunjee'd at the time so I dont' think they rode up a tire. Only implements I have had hooked up for past 3 months were pull type mower and box blade (sand). The casting failure looked sudden although I suppose its hard to tell on an internal failure like this since rust/dirt in a stress crack will not be present??

Since it was so apart I was going to split the tractor front to back to fix a developing leak/overnight drip. However I found the top two North/South bolts to be very loose. These were accessible thru the rubber inspection cover located by the clutch pedal. A little tightening and no more leak.
