How can I Dig a 24-30\" trench for wires and water?

I need to run (100')an irrigation line and some power out to the new shop location.
Has anyone come up with a way of making this trench without digging up the whole yard.
I have a FEL, Tiller.
I don't have a backhoe and a trencher costs $200 a day up here.
Is there some way I could plow in the lines?

Kerr, that was my first thought, too, and you can make a pretty good trench with one, but I have doubts you could get 24 - 30" deep.

Wondering why you are going so deep? Frost? Or just to avoid hitting it if working up the ground above?
Not much beyond a shovel and a pick that will limit the problem of messing up the yard, other than the ditcher (ditch witch type). That $200 in your pocket will make the digging go much better. Seems 15 - 18" would be far enough down to avoid hitting it from above. That can be done with a good tiling spade and a tiling scoop to clean out the trench. The single tooth sub-soiler on the 3pt will work to cut through roots and to 'move' rocks out of the way if they are not too big. Still have to clean out the cut made by the sub-soiler. Good luck.

We had a good long thread about this a few months ago ...

Beenthere
Up in Canada, our beloved Government, thinks we Canadians are so special, we need more protection that the average soul on this planet.
All our codes are extra cautious.
In this case you need 24" if you put some barrier over the wire other wise you must be 30" deep.
I figured 24",put the wire in, couple inches of fill and then the water line couple more inches, then caution tape and then the rest of the fill.

As far as that 3PT tool I never seen one before, Ihave very sandy soil so it should work most excellent.
I guess I'm going shopping.

I doubt that you will find a ripper that long in cat. I. Even if you do, it is highly unlikely that it would clear the ground with the 3ph all the way up. Also, to end up with 24", you have to cut a little deeper than that. I think the trencher is the way to go. -Stan

Steve,
Make sure that you know what the all regulations are before starting. Around here you can have the electric and the water in the same ditch, but they have to be a “cubic foot apart”. The water line also has to be in the bottom. If you don’t do it that way here, when the inspector checks it you would be doing it all again./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
