A metallic chatter noise has been observed under certain operating conditions. It seems to come from within the HST, just under the front right corner seat area.

After the tractor is "hot", such as during PTO use accompanied by a load on the HST, I hear this noise when pushing the HST to its functional limits.

An example: Roto tilled the garden the other day and incorporated a lot of organic material. Then used the loader to move the loose dirt into a large pile for mixing of more organic material. When approaching the pile of dirt with the FEL, the chattering sound can be heard when the tractor meets resistance. If the tractor is not hot, the HST will either stall or simply not move since I have plenty of traction.

The noise sounds like a pressure relief valve chattering or a loose chain being pulled over a sprocket. I sometimes hear the noise after several hours of mowing and then climbing a steep hill in high range. I have also heard this while in low range, but not as often as the high range since it is harder to challenge the capacity of the low range gear with available traction.

I have checked fluids, adjustments, and temperatures: all seem to be per specs. I never experienced this with my former BX2200.

Any suggestions from the Forum as to what may be causing this noise, and if it is something to worry about. I took my tractor to the Dealer this morning....could not reproduce it for them since it was not good and warm yet. They plan to put it on the dyno and load the PTO to see if they can recreate it.

Any advise would be appreciated. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The area where you indicate the noise seems to come from is the area of the HST where the brake linkage, lift linkage and speed control linkage connects to the HST. These are mostly external. Theres several adj springs on each of these linkages. Perhaps one of these linkages is the culprit.
Hopefully the dealer will nail it down for you.

Good luck

Thanks Volfandt.
I sure hope it is something simple like that.

Somewhere, somehow.... a Realtor sign was caught in the framework. I never saw it til we took off the fenders. It would rub against the hydro fan when under a torque load.

Any ideas how a Realtor sign ends up on the inside of your BX?

Maybe I'll just dig a big hole with my BH for the fun of it.... then maybe I won't feel so bad. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Your posts reinforces my desire to get a skid plate for my BX.

Too much fragile stuff under there with the MMM off.

Thks.

Skid plate... that's a great reminder.
What's the latest news on skid plates?

If you do a search here on skid plates & BX, you'll see several homemade and one that is sold by an individual. Either looks like it would work.

I have the plate for mine, just need time & motivation to build it.

Turns out the sign was not the source of the noise after all. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I am hearing it again in the hotter weather.
Several observations:

Only occurs when everything is pretty hot and the BX has been running a while.

Only happens in high gear when against a load (like going up a hill while mowing or pushing into a big pile of mulch with FEL.)

Not always present when against a load. Sometimes the engine will bog down and even stall out, but no noise. Other times I will hear the noise but no bog down or stall.

Since it is intermittent and related to ability to stall the engine, could this be some type of chatter from a pressure relief valve?
Anyone else hear it?
Is it normal?
Any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks for your suggestions!

I think your go pedal stop may have been misadjusted when you got it, allowing it to rock too far forward - - the full speed position. The manual says not to adjust because someone may think they can go faster and push harder by making the pedal travel further, when in fact they are causing abuse of the HST. My BX1500 has not made that noise but it will only come close to stall under full pedal and hi load. I think you should get to the point that you are having the noise and then adjust the front pedal stop bolt out about 2 turns. If this stops it make sure you can still bog your engine down and readjust so that you can (short of causing the noise). I would also talk to the factory about what damage the misadjustment may have caused.
Just a shot in the dim,
Larry
