No broken axles yet on my 4 year old BX2200 and I frequently carry a max load in the bucket.

Hey... I didn't think that there was a "flat spot" where you live!:D

Probably broke it carrying that gazebo around :D :D
I'm interested to see if anyone else has broken one too.
Kevin, you may be the 1st :D

Kevin,

Weren't you going to install duels on your BX? If you did get around to the duels, I wonder if that had any impact on your axle?

Yep! duals would cause that... as would a manufacturing defect.

To break an axle like that, it looks like someone hit the tire against an immoveable object such as a tree or gate post. When a shaft breaks from too much power, it will have a spiral type crack that kind of goes around like a thread would. It could possibly been a defect in the material. Rare, but possible especially if Kubota is buying cheap Chinese or such steel.

I broke a rear axle on my 8N once, just outside of the splines in the differential. The broken ends were kind of rounded off just like in your pic. I was backing up in my driveway when all of a sudden , no go. I decided that somewhere along the way the axle had gotten bent: you've seen tractors going down the road with the tire appearing to wobble as it turns. Well anyway, I figured the wobble ended up flexing the axle a little bit each revolution and finally the metal fatigued and started breaking apart.

BTW I made sure I got all of the metal chips and chunks out of the differential before I put the new axle in.\

Today I think I found out what broke my axle...
I was using the Kubota today and I noticed a scuffling sound when i was on the gravel making a turn... so I watched the back wheels and one was sliding around and not turning... My differentiel lock was stuck... The pedal was not coming back up to the top... A little WD-40 and it was like new again... With the weight of the hoe and my duels and working on hard ground with the differentiel lock on is not good...

What do you think??? Was that my problem ???

Front what I have read here and in my manual, diff lock should only be used when moving straight ahead (prefereably on soft ground as well). With it locked, on a hard surface, and turning, you are putting a lot of strain on the axel. I wonder how the other one is doing.

How long do you figure the diff was locked?

I have no idea how long it was locked... I'm not worried about the other axle because when this one broke it went with a BANG... I don't think it would brake half way... It was all or nothing...
You can bet I'll be watching the differential for a while...
