cat mulching head

I have been looking at a cat 287 or 297 used, with a mulching head. The cat rep wants me to by there mulching head. Anybody know much about cat mulching heads.He said the new ones are redesigned and are awesome. You know the salesman says there great, but he is not going to be in the field with it.

I wasnt impressed with the one I rented...Believe its a FAE with Cat badging and minor differences..Ran it on a 287B High Flow..But it was a rental and dull and missing teeth so.....1 year ago..Maybe the new one is better..CAT HM 312........JUST MY 2 CENTS...Hopefully CAT will get with the plan and build a better one.......

It is an FAE head and I think they are too narrow for the machine width (46" cut compared to a 78" machine width) and leave too much uncut material for the tracks to run over.

Terra Firma Scott is right, FAE signed with CAT a few years ago. So when you get a mulcher head from CAT, it's actually an FAE head with a CAT logo.

These days, Yancey Brothers, in GA, are demoing one of our heads (DAF-180D, horizontal-shaft, fixed-knives type, 74" cutting width) on a CAT 297C. you need to check out the newer cat head with the new FAE viper teeth
cat is sell over 35 per month
the new head is wider larger dia, shorter hoses and matched with the new C skid steers it a supper cutter
i have seen a study with the sharp teeth ver FAE C type over 40 hr the c type is 30% a head dont just look at the 30 min demo
they also report getting 140 hr on the viper with out stopping to sharpen or replace
after Yancey Brothers did the demos they ordered the cat mh315 with viper teeth and have sold most of them within days after the demo

i under stand a big demo is going to be held out side Ashlanad VA the end of march i understand that its a 3 day test

35 units per month? I'd have loved Yancey to sell our heads instead...

But 140 hrs without sharpening, that sounds to me like there is waste of energy somewhere. There's no material (outside some high-tech laboratories maybe) that, under normal working conditions, will keep a sharp edge that long without the need for sharpening. If you don't sharpen during 140 hrs, then you're working with dull blades, which isn't much better than hammers, really...

People at DENIS CIMAF have worked since 1991 on the brushcutter with knives concept, and there's no magic: either you work faster but take some time to resharpen, or you work slower and harder with carbide hammers and you don't bother sharpening.

yes new steel are around all the time and the new bimetal blast welded steel with a 63+R and is getting 120 to 140 hrs with out sharpening lossing only 10% of its production rate from new.

I will be testing a newer type in a new area near Richamond VA. next week

oh yes FAE had a knive type blade back in 1998 and Royer did in the Mid 70's

Hey there Biker. I was at a demo yesterday and saw the exact setup run that you speak of. All I can say is this. PLease PM me and I would like for you to attend the next demo. Then you can personally run A Denis Cimaf head against whatever you desire and can make your determination from that.
The customer we demoed for went with our head over the CAT.

I understand that metallurgy is an ever-evolving science. And I recognize it might possible that FAE has come up with the Graal-of-steels that we've been trying to find with specialists. I'll just hope it's not *too* good

But that's what is good about competition: it keeps brains busy.

i have run a lot of the heads done tests on them, have taken them apart.
have been to the plant a few times.

wait until you see the newest mulcher/grinder made this is so bad, it grinds rocks and stumps 6" below grade and it fits on a skid steer
