Shade Tolerant Grass
My father in law has heavy tree cover, and his lawn has never been great.
What seed suggestions would anyone have for New York? We don't get a lot of rain.
I looked this up online and found little that helped me for northern states.
Thanks in advance

Re: Shade Tolerant Grass
I got some shade tolerant grass here in southern MN from Albert LEa Seed House.
It does grow in the shade.
However, it is a rather fragile grass, does not handle traffic or frequent mowing. It's very course, more like oats or wheat than a fine grass.
I beilive these are common tradeoffs, something to be aware of.

Re: Shade Tolerant Grass
No grass will grow well in the shade.
Use shade tolerant grass seed, in the fall.
The grass will grow in the spring, when the leaves are not yet on the trees.
While there are no leaves, the grass seed will germinate and grow in the sunlight. Isn't that nice?
Perhaps thin some branches from the trees and, by all means keep the grass clean of debris.

What about saint augustine grass. I dunno if it grows in your area but it grows really well in full shade and sun in the south. Its a very thick lush grass, dark green in color. The only thing wrong with it is it grows really fast. Needs mowing weekly.

Re: Shade Tolerant Grass
ALL lawn grasses need sunlight.
Grow 'em early spring before leaves are on the trees.
Resign yourself to annual touch ups.

Re: Shade Tolerant Grass
I laid down two pallets of shade tolerant grass under my live oaks, and it all died.
Two much shade.
Rye grass grows well, but dies when temp gets to about 80.J.J.
When I works, I works hard. When I sits and thinks, I goes to sleep.
Git er done.
