Default Small Engine Oil - Honda Oil versus Automotive Oil

Anyone care to offer an opinion of what oil to use in a small Honda engine ie: generator, pressure washer, mower, pump. I am trying to find the Honda Power Equipment oil but it is over $9.00 here. I've seen some manuals state that automotive detergent type 10w-30 is spec'ed but I've also read not to use automotive oil.

Use a good grade of 10w-30 oil and you'll be good.

Ditto. If what they are selling is $9.00 a quart, there better be a prize at the bottom of the bottle
