It drives a clevis link that fits fairly close against the eye. That keeps it close coupled, but inadequate for long life at hi reversing stresses ... esp with the stress riser notch/grease groove at the point of greatest bend moment. A bad design choice for the position.The narrow eye on the rod end is the key I bet, the load needed to be spread out wide I'd think, toward where the pin was supported on it's ends.
