Default 4110 Fuel Gauge - sending unit

I am having a problem with my fuel gauge on my 4110. I thinks its always had a little problem but the symptoms recently changed. When new, the gauge would show full or near full when I filled it up and would go to near empty when about 5 gallons of gas was used - it would run for several hours on near empty. Recently I've ran into problems running out of fuel with the indicator showing 3/4 to a full tank. After a fillup, the needle barely moves and stays within that range until I run it out again.

Any suggestions on where I start hunting this down. I would assume that if I had an electrical issue I would either get full, empty, or proper indication by the needle but not one "stuck" in a very small range so I am leaning to beieve that I have a stuck float or one with a whole in it. I want to check the float but have no idea on how to get to it. I know where the gas tank is but haven't looked yet to see whats involved in exposing the tank and sending unit.

Remove the metal panel on top of the tank and the sending unit is held into the top of the tank by several screws. After it is removed you can test it with a meter.

thanks, that's where I assume it was but I wasn't sure. I'll try to get to it this weekend and get it checked out. If I need to buy parts, I'll contact you as Red River Tractor (my closest dealer) has closed down. Also need a seal for the PTO input on the Bush Hog 84" finishing mower if you sell Bush Hog parts - saw a little weeping this past weekend.

got the sending unit pulled out and found the metal parts of hte unit were extremely rusty - very surprised. I cleaned off the rust as best I could ad the unit appears to be working again. I suspect the rust got it in a bind in the tank as it moved pretty freely once I got it out. The electrical part of it worked just fine.
