I am at the 100 hr service point of my 3316. I am considering synthetic gear oil for the front differential. GL-4 is specified; most is rated GL-5.

GL-5 is generally considered fine as long as there is no yellow metal (brass, bronze, etc.). There is even debate regarding this; which I don't care to debate. I would rather be safe than sorry.

I would just like to know if there is any yellow metal in the front differential of my 3316; as I will steer clear of the GL-5 rated lubes.

I also know that it is common to simply use UTF in the front axle and recall reading that is the fill used at assembly in CA.

Thanks for helping if you know the answer to my question.

UTF is what Mahindra recomends.

Thanks for the reply.

The manual calls for either depending on where you look. Somewhere, on this website, may not have been in Mahindra section; a lubrication specialist recommended going with the gear oil over the UTF.

I can not find any that is GL-4 and decided since I had to purchase two five gallon pails of UTF I might as well use it both places. If the UTF is good enough for the rear differential then it should be fine for the front.

Still have not changed as I did not realize the HST had two different hydraulic filters; so I purchased the HST hydraulic filter but not the main hydraulic filter. Back to my Mahindra dealer Monday. I thought it was one or the other filter depending on HST vs. Gear. Tractor is not at my house as it is on rural property; so I can't just go out and look w/o travelling 20 miles.

Next time we will know.
