I just drilled a hole in the edge of the bucket, and carry a spare ball in the 'tool' box. Drop it into the hole, and put a quick hitch pin in it. Used to just thread the nut on, but that took more 'time' so drilled the hole for the quick pin.
The hole is also use for a clevis from which to hang (or thread) a chain through (like when hanging up deer, or loading things in the trailer, or just picking things up with the bucket edge).
Some advantage to your approach to get the tongue further in front of the bucket for 'sharper' turns. Just one more approach.
