This photo looks like the bottom part of your hydraulic pump filter holder. Am I right?

Thanks for the info. So according to the page you provided, looks like it's a 1961 with a Perkins diesel and Multi-Power. That's good stuff! I was reading up on the Multi-Power, but still don't understand the exact purpose for it. I guess it's to 'split' the gears??? If I understand what I read correctly, it said you get 12 forward and 4 reverse and go from hi to low without depressing the clutch. Maybe kind of like an early version of shuttle shift??? Should I start a new thread to discuss the Multi-Power?

You are correct about the the filter holder. When I bought the tractor, the PTO lever wouldn't shift, and when I removed the plate, I found the holder and filter jammed under the lever. The only thing that concerns me is that I never found the other half of the holder or the retaining wire that others have mentioned that keeps it from unscrewing. When I changed the trans fluid, I replaced the filter and straightened out the dents in the holder the best I could. Luckily the 'groove' that seats the filter was in tact, so it was making a good seal with the filter, I just hope it doesn't happen again. I have put about 4 or 5 hours on it since the fluid change, and want to check it, but I really don't want to drain that expensive fluid just to check. However, I guess the fluid is pretty cheap compared to a torn up tranny or hydraulic pump. There was a lot of water in the case, when I drained the old fluid, due to sitting out in a field for almost a year before I got it. I've read that I should flush the case and hydraulics with diesel fuel to remove any remaining moisture. I'm just a little hesitant because I don't want to damage anything. I've got to look at the Multi-Power switch because it's seized in the up position.

I tried to get a good pic of the steering column and cover plate. I need to check/change the power steering fluid, but I can't tell from the picture in my manual exactly where to check and or drain/fill. Here's the pic again. I drew a red oval around what I believe to be the fill/check bolt, but I need someone to verify.

Also, in the pic below, is this where I would tap in for hydraulic remote so I could use a log splitter?

Thanks for looking.

Great pictures. They show areas that need attention.

Pictures clearly shows why there was water in the fluid . Bad shifter boots. They are an entry point for water into the tranny fluid. Contaminated hydraulic fluid will shut down the hydro lift and possibly the Multi-power. My concern is the photo of the filter housing. This might explain the MP lever jammed. Also how long was the tractor ran without an internal hydro filter. That filter protected many vital components of the tractor. Multi-Power, Hydro lift, tranny and rear end. If I'm not mistaken the filter holder is made from aluminum, so it gets crunched if passing thru the gears. Bad news is if particals entered the Hydro it can jam the pumps. Good news is parts for the mechanics are nearly all available aftermarket.

Did you replace the missing filter holder? The lid has a finned top to be able to use your finger to tighten it. Also one if the fins has a hole to secure the top with wire. Those filters with holder are rather cheap and well worth relacing to assure the tranny is properly filtered.

Someone may have changed the filter and didn't install a safety wire on the top which keeps it from unscrewing. I'm afraid your either going to have a to get crash course in hydraulic repair or take to the shop to have them go thru it.
You are correct on picture 10. That cover comes off and the aux valve control would go there.
The picture showing the steering. I believe the nut is to secure the mesh adjustment to tighten the steering slop.

Beware the bolts that held the seat on. They are thru bolts into the tranny. Dirt can fall in if not cleaned first.

Don't open your tractor up without working knowledge on how to disassemble, or you could damage something else doing so.

These are beautiful tractors when restored. With all the options yours has it was the Cadillac of it's class. The 35 diesel with those options are highly collectable and sought after.
There is tons of info on the net for the tractor. Learn all you can first will make reading the manual clear. -kid

Thanks for all the info kid. I really don't know how long it was ran without the filter in place. The filter holder in the pic below is the one with the the fins for tightening.

The hydraulics are working like a champ now. The other day I was disconnecting the bush-hog and when I lowered the lift arms, it made a weird noise and the bush-hog dropped rapidly. Since then, they have been working great.

I noticed that if I push the lift lever all the way down (lower) the lift arms raise. I set the stop just above the full down position, and it works great.

Thanks Again.

Great news.you where fortunate not to have something seriously wrong. Just be sure to lock that new cap back on with wire when you get it replaced. -kid
