67 MF 135 Gas
So we bought a nice looking Massey 135 gas with the z145 engine this spring and have been using it to plow, disc mow and till on our small vegetable farm this season.

Early in June we changed the oil (first time since owing the tractor) and found gas in the oil. We were befuddled and worried but after weeks of running it the problem didn't reoccur.

Then this fall we started having problems with the tractor running when discing a small field. The tractor would spudder and act like it was choked for fuel unless I pulled back on the throttle or took it out of gear. After a few time of throttling it down I basically can't keep the tractor running and can barely drive it back to the barn to park it. After changing the oil again we found some more gas in it and it seems like oil might be leaking out of the spark plugs? Seems really strange and we can't quite wrap out heads around it.

We replaced the filters checked the sediment bulb and gas tank. Next we are planning to pull off the carb for a soaking but maybe we are looking at a winter engine rebuild?

Anyone have and advice?

Thanks

Are you sure its gas and not water/anti-freeze...gas and oil would probably mix as they are both hydro carbons...and just make the oil thinner...what color does the "gas" look like? It sounds like a blown head gasket to me.... BobG in VA

A compression test and examine the spark plugs for signs of incomplete combustion might be a good first step.

Rebuild the Carb before you tear the engine apart. Sounds like float problems.

yup. leaky flaot valve and leaving tank tap on can flood the sump with gas thinning the oil, making it overfull. this will reduce lube, accelerate wear, and likely defeat the oil control rings and make it a pumper.

+1. Had that problem with the Marvel Schebler carb on my Farmall Cub.

Checking out the carb today, what should we look for with the float valve? Is that something we can readjust or do we need to buy a carb kit?

Also what do you mean when you say "make it a pumper"?

Thanks for the tips!

oil pumper.. once the rings wear.

as for the flaot valve, there will be a small needle that rides in a bore, will have a brass, steel, or vito tip, it hits a removeable seat. can be bad tip, eroded seat, seat with a missing phenolic gasket, or a stuck needle.

next, the flaot could be pinholed and thus heavy, ir the hinge pin come out one side and making hte float cock to one side and hang against hee wall, or be bent and rubbing the wall.

to check for a heavy or pinholed float, take it out and shake it, listen for sloshing.

imerse float in a cup of very hot water.. if htere is a pinhole, you will see a trail of small bubles foamoing out of the hole as the air inthe flaot is heated and expelled.
